QVC’s ‘Black Friday’ Deals: Too Ahead Of Their Time?

November 1, 2016

Talk about jumping the gun.

QVC is already touting what it calls Black Friday deals.

Pardon us, but isn’t the day after Thanksgiving still a long way off?

As one person posted on a QVC.com forum, “Somehow the entire concept of Black Friday loses whatever appeal it might have when you can get those ‘deals’ (which aren’t deals of course) a entire three weeks in advance of Black Friday.”

You said it, sister.

It’s Christmas In July For QVC, Colbert And Lord & Taylor

July 19, 2016

We’ve blogged about it once and now we’ll do it again: We hate the home-shopping network practice of having Christmas-in-July sales.

QVC held its own annoying one last week, where we had to watch host Rick Domeier hawking fake Christmas trees. But most of the home shopping channels have jumped on this bandwagon.

And now, for what we’ve noticed for the first time, brick-and-mortar retailers are having Christmas-in-July sales. That includes Lord & Taylor.

We even saw that Macy’s had a “Black-Friday-in-July” event.

We can’t escape.

As we sat down to write this blog Monday night, our fellow Montclair, N.J., resident Stephen Colbert was doing a song-and-dance number about the Republican convention.

In his convention song, Colbert warbled, “It’s like Christmas in July!”

Oy vey!

How Big Was QVC’s Black Friday? You Tell Us

December 3, 2015

QVC was tooting its own horn over its Thanksgiving weekend sales, and we guess it is entitled to. It was a record-busting time, according to the Q.

Unfortunately, the No. 1 home shopping network didn’t disclose any actual numbers. It didn’t tell us how much revenue was actually generated.

It didn’t tell us what percent sales were up this Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday versus last year, or how the week compared to QVC’s prior biggest-sales week.

And truth be told, we didn’t order one thing.

Here is the story, sans important details, from the horse’s mouth:

U.S. Shoppers Make Thanksgiving Week Biggest in QVC’s History

QVC Sets New Sales Records and Hits All-Time Digital Sales High as Customers

Tune in for Hot Gift Items and Exclusive Deals

December 1, 2015 – From Monday, November 23 to Sunday, November 29, U.S. shoppers flocked to QVC for the hottest gift items and exclusive deals, making this the largest week ever in sales at QVC, as well as the highest-selling Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday in QVC’s history.

Underscoring a growing consumer preference to shop from the comfort of home – and avoid the chaos of brick-and-mortar retailers – QVC U.S. also achieved record ecommerce sales via web and mobile throughout the week.

Personal electronics, kitchen electrics, and apparel and accessories from brands such as DellTM, Canon, KitchenAid and Susan Graver were among the hottest sellers, each representing a Today’s Special Value®, the best find of the day. The Today’s Special Value for Saturday, November 28, a Dell Windows 10 Laptop, was the highest-selling TSV item ever on QVC.com.

“Throughout the week, shoppers turned to QVC for the season’s most-desired items, from camera-enabled drones to fitness gadgets and functional fashion accessories, making QVC the ultimate gift destination for the whole family,” said Ken O’Brien, SVP of Global Brands Management and U.S. Buying, QVC.

“It is clear that our customers prefer to embrace the joy of holiday by shopping remotely, visiting QVC across TV, web, mobile, tablet and social media, rather than the long-standing tradition of heading to the stores.”

QVC U.S. milestones for the week include:

Thanksgiving week (November 23-29) was the biggest week in terms of sales in QVC’s history. Ecommerce accounted for 58% of sales.

Thanksgiving Day (November 26) was the highest-selling Thanksgiving ever.

Black Friday (November 27) was the highest-selling Black Friday ever on QVC.com.

Cyber Monday (November 30) was the highest-selling Cyber Monday ever.

“We look for products that bring the joy of discovery to customers, and the best sellers across categories have one unifying theme – customers can find what they love, and love what they find at QVC this holiday season,” O’Brien concluded.

Product highlights of the week:

· Electronics, including audio players, computers and cameras from popular brands such as Bose®, Dell and Canon were hot sellers.

· Classic kitchen favorites from Vitamix, KitchenAid, and Keurig were popular choices in cooking and dining.

· Shoppers rushed to buy must-have beauty gift sets from premier brands such as bareMinerals®, tarte, Josie Maran and IT Cosmetics.

· Fun, hi-tech items like the Panther Wide Drone with Camera and the Fitbit Wireless Activity Tracker have been popular.

· Accessories and apparel from top brands including Dennis Basso, Isaac Mizrahi LIVE!TM, Susan Graver and Dooney & Bourke remain hot.

· Items that combine fashion and function are striking it big, including the G.I.L.I. got it love it® with HALOGUARD Leather RFID Pouch and the LODIS Italian Leather Credit Card Cases with RFID Protection, both designed to help protect your technology while providing a trendy edge.

Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit.

ShopHQ is crowing that it just enjoyed its best Thanksgiving weekend sales event in six years. The time span this year was from Nov. 28 to Dec. 2. The No. 4 home shopping network, however, didn’t release any actual sales figures.

“Our team executed a tremendous holiday shopping event,” ShopHQ Chief Merchandising Officer Annette Repasch said in a canned statement.

“We have been listening to our customers and delivered an event that met their requests for more fashion, more products for their home and holiday entertaining, more beauty and more great consumer electronics gifts. On Black Friday, Will QVC Be Selling Bethelem Lights Christmas Trees?

November 17, 2012

The brick-and-mortar stores are going nuts for Black Friday, and QVC is doing the same for that day and Cyber Monday, or as it is calling it, “Mobile Monday.”

The No. 1 home shopping network, crowing that its U.S. mobile orders increased by 142 percent in the third quarter, is predicting “that Cyber Monday will look more like Mobile Monday as more consumers than ever before turn to mobile and tablet devices for holiday purchases.”

QVC U.S. honcho Claire Watts

QVC, crowing again, says it is the second-largest multi-category retailer in the Internet Retailer Mobile 400, and that it thinks mobile commerce will hit a milestone on Cyber Monday.

Here’s the scoop, according to QVC: “Unlike traditional retailers, QVC personalities will unveil fresh inspired gift ideas everyday on QVC.com, on QVC and through social channels, offering customers more holiday joy every time they log on and tune in this holiday season.”

QVC.com will be bringing us “Gift Tab,” where QVC shoppers can click to discover gift ideas inspired by real people (is Rick Domeier “real people”?), including QVC hosts, guests and the QVC customer community.

QVC.com will also feature the most pinned items from the QVC Pinterest boards.

The home shopping network will also be revealing weekly chapters of its “Inspired Gifting story, providing inspiration from perfect entertaining ideas to family gifts to stocking stuffers and a new way for Facebook fans to engage and share gift ideas.”

Okey-dokey.

“As more consumers take advantage of the convenience of shopping online and on mobile this holiday season, we’re engaging our customers through new social experiences, across all our platforms, to inspire and to offer an alternative to the holiday chaos,” QVC CEO U.S. Claire Watts said in a canned statement.

“QVC has the second largest mobile retail business in the U.S., and our strategy to create digital shopping experiences with strong integration across TV, PC, tablet and mobile platforms is not only a success with our customers, but is significantly outpacing the industry,” she said.

Suring Thanksgiving week and beyond, QVC will hawking these items:

* Bose Wave Music System III with additional remote control

* HP 15″ and 17″ Laptops with Win8, Next Gen AMD A6 APU, 8GBRAM 1TB HD

* Keurig Platinum Plus Brewer w/64 KCups, Filter& My K-Cup

QVC’s “Better than Black Friday” will air 48 hours of nonstop shopping with deals in every show beginning Thanksgiving.

The Black Friday Today’s Special Value® will be available Thursday at midnight.

Mobile Monday will include a Today’s Special Value and special pricing on more than 5,000 items on QVC.com and on the QVC app, including gifts under $50.

QVC is also offering “Easy Pay” on every Today’s Special Value now through Christmas Eve, allowing customers to receive items right away with extended payments.

November 23, 2011

The deals continue through this Sunday. The whole shebang started Monday, but we just got the press release today.

“We decided to give holiday shoppers a Black Friday Week to remember,” Randy Sadler, JTV vice president of marketing, said in a canned statement. “The network is introducing three-tiered pricing for the event — our everyday low prices, Black Friday countdown week prices, Cyber Monday specials and door-buster deals. JTV will feature jewelry in price ranges to fit everyone’s budget.”

How about getting your press release out on time, dude?

ShopNBC Posts 12 Percent Black Friday Sales Gain, And 36 Percent Jump Cyber Monday

December 1, 2010

Keith is very chatty

ShopNBC got a pretty good start for the holiday season, with total company sales rising 36 percent on Cyber Monday versus last year, led by a 59 percent increase in online sales, the home shopping network said Wednesday.

As a percentage of total revenue on Cyber Monday, e-commerce sales penetration rose to a record 56 percent, as compared to 48 percent a year ago.

ShopNBC places substantial emphasis on cross-promoting the flexibility, ease of use and customer benefits of its online sales channels, such as improved customer engagement, order tracking, ValuePay, and management of returns — or so it claims.

The No. 3 home shopping network maintained that its on-air strategy has enabled it “to achieve higher average e-commerce sales penetration than its multi-media retailing peers.” We’re not sure how true that is, but that’s the claim.

“For ShopNBC, higher e-commerce sales penetration has led to improved customer satisfaction, lower returns, and reduced costs,” the company said.

ShopNBC’s total “Black Friday” sales rose 12 percent versus the prior year, driven by a 54 percent increase in online sales. As a percentage of total sales on Black Friday, e-commerce sales penetration rose to 51 percent, as compared to 37 percent a year ago and 40.5 percent during the third quarter this year.

Unlike QVC, ShopNBC did not disclose the dollar-amount of its Black Friday sales. QVC raked in $42 million that day.

“The multi-channel shopper was quite active at ShopNBC over the Holiday Shopping Weekend, from Black Friday through Cyber Monday,” ShopNBC CEO Keith Stewart said in a very, very, very long canned statement. “We achieved sales gains and increasing e-commerce sales penetration by keeping the customer’s interest and attention over a sustained period of time on our multiple platforms of TV, online, mobile and social media.”

Keith are you paid by the word for this stuff?

“Video game consoles, big screen TVs, GPS devices, along with jewelry and watches, were some of the principal categories of interest to our customers,” he said. “The ease and convenience of shopping remotely, combined with our unique and ever-expanding product assortment, helped to drive much of the sales gains.”

And that’s not all folks.

“Additionally, ShopNBC’s focus on highlighting the benefit of online shopping continued to resonate with the consumer. Going forward, we remain highly focused on keeping the customer’s appetite satisfied with new products, exciting programming, and strong service to continue building loyalty and community during the Holidays and beyond,” Stewart said.

QVC Breaks Cyber Monday Record, Drawing 1.4 Million Visitors

December 1, 2010

Cyber Monday was very, very good to QVC.

Its website, QVC.com, enjoyed its biggest traffic day in its 14-year history, attracting 2 million sessions from more than 1.4 million unique visitors, QVC said Tuesday. That broke last year’s Cyber Monday record of more than 1 million unique visitors.

On average QVC.com generates roughly a third of QVC’s orders, however on Cyber Monday it accounted for nearly half of QVC’s total U.S. sales for the day.

Cyber Monday offered the largest selection of Event Prices during QVC’s The Joy of Giving Week. Shoppers enjoyed an additional benefit – free shipping on over 5,000 items, including select items in every show and the Today’s Special Value with no minimum purchase required.

“Every day, QVC.com delivers a rich, multimedia shopping experience unlike any other on the Web, and this year’s Cyber Monday really showcased that,” ever-quotable Claire Watts, QVC’s president of U.S. Commerce, said in a canned statement.

“With a terrific selection of unique products from trusted brands, offered at honest values and backed by QVC’s top-rated customer service, QVC.com has become a holiday shopping destination for millions of smart shoppers,” she said. “We’re thrilled with the overwhelming response we received from our customers, and will continue to strive to make their holidays a little less crazy, and a little more joyful.”

Cyber Monday followed QVC’s biggest Black Friday ever, ringing up more than $42 million in sales. The special event featured the season’s best deals on select, new gifts and While Supplies Last prices on limited-quantity, in-demand items. QVC.com offered additional specially priced products and featured online countdown offers in every hour.
