Hilary Joy’s HSN Silver Line Looks Like David Yurman’s Without His Inflated Prices

August 16, 2010

Milky aqua ring

Designer Hilary Joy’s silver jewelry line will air at 8 p.m. tonight on HSN, and we likey. It has the look and detail of high-end designers like David Yurman, at a fraction of the price.

As Joy tells us, her pieces are all oxidized sterling silver and have different textures.

Smokey quartz cuff

On tonight’s show, with host Connie Craig-Carroll, Joy’s new designs pay homage to the Tuilleries Gardens in Paris, and will feature a never-seen color of lilac amethyst that took her more than a year to collect.

Joy will also feature a tribute to her departed mother, a milky aqua that was already a 5-star pick in smokey topaz.

“She gave me her aqua engagement ring when I was 13 and I lost it down the drain while cleaning it never to be recovered,” Joy said.

Onyx pendant

Joy has been in the business for 28 years, designs every piece and can do every terchnical step from model to finished product from start to finish.

Here’s how HSN describes her:

Whether it’s the stained glass windows of historic cathedrals or the colors of the sky and sea, both history and art offer the inspiration behind this one-of-a-kind jewelry. Hilary Joy’s phenomenal pieces feature vividly colored gemstones creatively set atop boldly textured sterling silver. Delight in the drama and details of this HSN-exclusive collection that’s designed to make you stand apart from the rest.”

Jewelry Designer Carol Brodie Gives Us The Real ‘Poop’ On Elephants During Her HSN Visit

November 15, 2009

628670Well, we walked into the room in the middle of Carol Brodie’s three-hour show on HSN Saturday, and this is what we heard.

“I went on a safari for my birthday and all I saw was elephant poop with the hot smoke coming out of it,” blonde Brodie told host Connie Craig-Carroll.

What the heck! We had to watch the video later on HSN’s Web site to figure out what Brodie was talking about.

Brodie made her elephant remarks while describing a $170 “tusk” pendant that is part of her jewelry line. It’s crafted from frosted white topaz, white diamonds and African white sapphires.

Brodie, a veteran of Harry Winston, said she had gone to South Africa and seen marvelous wildlife like zebras, but no elephants. As the safari rode along, Brodie — obviously a city girl — said they passed big mounds with smoke coming out of them.

She was still asking where the elephants were when the safari guide got out of their truck and took a whiff of one of those mounds. Surprise, surprise — it was elephant dung, which was supposed to be leading Brodie and her crew to the behemoths.

Hence Brodie’s “all-I-saw-was-elephant-poop” remark about her birthday adventure.

We figure that will be the one and only time anyone will hear the words “elephant poop” uttered on HSN.

Gained Weight Or Pregnant? What’s Up With Heftier QVC Hosts Like Jacque Gonzales, and HSN’s Connie Craig-Carroll and Shivan Sarna?

November 11, 2009

What’s one of the most-asked question from our Web site viewers? It’s whether specific QVC and HSN hosts are pregnant.

In the past week or so there have been numerous variations of the inquiry, regarding QVC’s Jill Bauer, Jane Treacy and Jacque Gonzales; and HSN’s Shivan Sarna, Lynn Murphy, Connie Craig-Carroll and Suzanne Runyan.

We wish we had the answer to your question, but we don’t. We’ve already blogged and said that these hosts have gained a lot of weight in the past few months. They can’t all be pregnant.

Jacque Gonzales

Next thing you know people will be asking if QVC’s David Venable, who has packed on a few pounds after taking over the cooking beat, is in the family way.

Neck-in-neck with the pregnancy question is what happened to Pam McCoy and Wes McCoy at ShopNBC. Cost-cutting, my friends, cost-cutting.

Jewelry Designer Scaasi Needs To Lose The Attitude On HSN

October 6, 2009

Is there anyone nastier and more condescending than jewelry designer Scaasi during his HSN appearances?

He’s “a couture designer,” but now he’s got a low-priced jewelry line on the No. 2 home shopping channel. But every time he’s on the air, he makes snide remarks and asides that leave the hosts squirming. His tone is dripping with sarcasm.

Monday night Scaasi was on with poor host Connie Craig-Carroll, and he was his usual charming self. At one point, he asked how much one of his pearl and rhinestone rings was selling for. Craig-Carroll told him $19.95.

“I don’t how you do these things,” Scaasi said of the pricing. “Are you sure HSN makes any money?”

The irony is, we don’t how HSN does it either. Scaasi’s fashion jewelry for HSN is really pretty, we have to hand it to him. A gorgeous pearl waterfall bib necklace was priced at just $59.95, and looked like it cost multiples of that.

But if Scaasi feels he’s too good for HSN, that it’s too downscale for him, he shouldn’t be creating jewelry for the network.

Advice for Chunky QVC and HSN Hosts: You Go Girls, To The Gym, And Skip Wolfgang’s Food

September 24, 2009

Shannon Smith

The female hosts on QVC and HSN may or may not be getting better, but they sure are getting bigger. Women on both the No. 1 and No. 2 home shopping channels seem to have gained a lot of weight in the past few months, enough that it had us doing a double-take at what we are seeing on the screen.

HSN’s Lynn Murphy, Chris Scanlon, Connie Craig-Carroll, Suzanne Runyan and Shannon Smith are all looking fuller around the face and hips. It’s a sad setback for Smith, who slimmed down last year and looked spectacular.

Perhaps everyone is doing too much sampling when celebrity chefs Wolfgang Puck, Emeril Lagasse and Todd English are in the house, cooking up a storm to demonstrate their cookware lines.

We aren’t the only ones to notice the weight gains. One writer on an HSN Forum asked whether Murphy was pregnant, because she looks so big. Murphy got married this summer.

If she is pregnant, we’re not aware that she’s officially announced it yet, or if any of her colleagues are pregnant (Here’s a hot tip: Never ask a woman when she’s due unless you are absolutely sure she is pregnant).

And on QVC, right now Jill Bauer, Jane Treacy and Jacque Gonzales sure look a lot wider when they stand up and step away from their tables on-air.

It’s said that the TV camera makes you look 15 pound heavier, but these ladies can’t blame the camera for the girth we are seeing on them now.

They need to start using their own networks’ products, starting with Spanx for a slimmer appearance immediately and then going on NutriSystem to lose the extra pounds.

Maybe everyone should ask QVC host Patti Reilly for her diet secrets. The once hefty host is a sliver of her old self, with a teeny wasp-like waist. Patti, you look marvelous.
