ShopNBC Does ‘Twilight,’ And We’re Talking About Black Diamonds, Not Young Vampires

April 19, 2010

On its 30-hour Diamond Day Sunday, ShopNBC introduced a new line of black diamonds, called the Twilight Diamond Collection.

In fact, the network’s Today’s Top Value was a one-carat black and white diamond sterling silver stick cross.

The cross was $188, at five $38 Value Pays. We know we shouldn’t have, but we ordered it. We collect crosses, and a black diamond one was too much to resist. If it is really sparkly, we’ll keep it. If not, it goes back.

ShopNBC’s rivals have been selling colored diamonds for some time. QVC, as part of its trademark Affinity diamond line, offers Skylit Affinity blue diamonds, as well as champagne, black and yellow diamonds.

HSN sells black and blue diamonds, although not under any special name.

And just like QVC has its diamond expert, Michael O’Connor, ShopNBC trotted out its counterpart to him, “Jewelry Expert” Liz Bucheit, on Sunday.

QVC’s Big Bonanza Silver Sale Boasts A Few Break-Out Pieces, But We’ll Skip The Kiss

March 1, 2010

Today is QVC’s Big Bonanza Silver Sales day, to mark the anniversary of the richest silver strike in North America’s history: The Comstock Lode March 1, 1873, in Virginia City, Nevada.

It’s QVC’s 22nd annual Big Bonanza Silver Day, and in past year’s the network has announced how much new stock — $25 million, $30 million, whatever the case might be — it was bringing in for the event. No such info for this silver sale.

We’re not overwhelmed by the merchandise, but some pieces are standing out. We saw a pair of silver and 18 gold-clad hoops with a diamond cross that we may have to take a look at.

And with sliced agate the rage in high and low-end jewelry, QVC has a pretty suite of a matching necklace, bracelet and ring in three colors.

And this big black-and-white diamond ring, presented by jewelry-stylist-to-the stars Michael O’Connor, stood out. It’s a nice buy at $138, down from its normal price of over $200.

QVC is also doing a hard sell on a diamond-accented Hershey Kiss pendant, at $43, but we’re just not feeling it.

Who Wore a QVC Diamond Ring on the Emmy Red Carpet? Hint: It’s Someone From ‘The Office’

September 23, 2009

Some of the Emmy red-carpet bling came from QVC, believe it or not. Actress Phyllis Smith, who plays Phyllis Lapin on “The Office,” was wearing a QVC three-quarter carat diamond ring at the festivities in LA. No cubic zirconia for the Emmys. QVC was hawking the white gold estate-style ring, with round and baquette diamonds, Tuesday night.

The sparkler is part of QVC’s Affinity line of diamonds, and sells for a pricey $673.68. But those six Easy Pays of $112.68 may have helped those who wanted to buy it, recession and unemployment be damned.

Celebrity stylist Michael O’Connor, whose specialty is jewelry, is QVC’s point person on diamonds, which is how the home-shopping network’s ring got on Smith’s hand. O’Connor showed a photo of him and Smith, wearing the ring, at the Emmy Governors Ball Sunday, which is the dinner and party after the awards show. Sweet.
