The Gatsby Girls, Who Are Also Jersey Girls, Are Back Tonight With Season 2 Of ‘Jerseylicious’

We know we’ve beem remiss in posting, but we had some other duties to attend to, like writing an update on the impact of “Jerseylicious” on The Gatsby Salon in Green Brook, N.J. Here’s our story on NewJerseyNewsroom.com.

The Style Network’s hit “Jerseylicious” has its Season 2 debut tonight at 8 p.m., and we interviewed by phone the mother-and-daughter team that owns and runs The Gatsby, Gayle Giacomo and Christy Pereira. We sent written questions to Tracy DiMarco and Alexa “The Glam Fairy” Prisco by e-mail, and got their responses via e-mail.

For those who’ve been living under a rock, “Jerseylicious” is one of a string of hit reality shows set in our beloved Garden State, and it had some dust-ups similar to those in MTV’s “Jersey Shore” and Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.”

In the first season Giacomo hired new staff to boost business at her newly renovated salon. That included bringing on hairstylist DiMarco and makeup artist Olivia Blois Sharpe, who got into many a shouting match in Season 1.

We feel a special affinity for this show because we went to The Gatsy to interview Giacomo, Pereira, Sharpe and hair stylist Anthony Lombardi before the show debuted last March. We didn’t know if it would be a success or not, but it turned out to be a hit for Style.

And there is that six-degrees-of-separation thing, too.

One of Sharpe’s friends and roommates is Briella Calafiore, who is also in the show. Briella is my sister’s hairstylist at the Fusion salon in Denville, N.J., where we also get our hair done. We have the business card that Briella gave us sitting right here.

And our friend Ann just saw Filippo, who is Lombardi’s flirtatious assistant at The Gatsby, at the pizza parlor that his family owns on Staten Island. Ann has known Filippo and his family for years.

Anyway, we’re rooting for all of the Jersey girls in “Jerseylicious.”

‘Housewife Of New Jersey’ Teresa Giudice And Her Husband, In Bankruptcy, Owe $11 Million To Creditors, New York Post Reports

We read this story yesterday, but we tried to resist blogging about it. But when our cousin Judy out in Washington State e-mailed it to us, we knew it was dish we had to spread.

On Saturday the New York Post did a great story, headlined “Deadbeat Reality: Spendaholic ‘Housewife’ of NJ’ Owes a Big-Hair-raising $11 M,” on table flipper Teresa Giudice.

Man, we thought we were shopaholics, but we have nothing on Giudice, a mainstay of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” She’s been buying up a storm ($20,000 on credit cards for Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom, no TJ Maxx for her), even though she and her husband Joe owe $11 million to creditors.

According to bankrupcty papers filed in Newark federal court that the Post dug up, a bank is looking to foreclose on the Giuduce’s $1.8 million mansion in Totowa, N.J.

The Post claims that banks have already seized the Giudice’s shore house.

Money is so tight, the Giudices have defaulted on their monthly $1,280 payments for their Escalade, according to the Post.

Giudice, a stage mom who has worked hard to get her small daughters modeling gigs, makes $3,333 a month for doing the Bravo reality show, according to court papers, the Post reported.

Although we see them living large on TV, in bankrupty filings Giudice, who just wrote a cookbook called “Skinny Italian,” and her husband claim they only spend $400 a month on clothes.

We met Giudice at a party for the premiere of the second season of “Real Housewives of New Jersey,” and she was pretty and sweet. So we hope she and her husband can get out from under their debt.

‘Jerseylicious’ Nets Lousy Ratings, As One Viewer Proclaims ‘We’ve Had Enough of New Jersey’

Well, for awhile there New Jersey, and its loud shoot-from-the-hip residents, seemed to have captured the loving attention of American TV viewers. But the audience has spoken now, and it’s apparently had enough.

The numbers are in for “Jerseylicious,” and they are not good. We knew something was up when Style Network didn’t put out a ratings press release Monday about the show’s premiere Sunday night.

“Jerseylicious,” which chronicles the lives of the owners and stylists at the Gatsby Salon in Green Brook, N.J., had only 320,000 total viewers for its debut. The show posted a 0.42 rating with women in the 18-to-34 demographic.

It pains us to see this, since were like the cast members of the show and were rooting for it.

But it looks like America is sick and tired of seeing fatmouthed, overdressed Jerseyites. Audiences bought into Garden-State shows such as Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” (a fav of ours) and MTV’s “Jersey Shore” (which we detested). But that ship has sailed.

We wish “Jerseylicous” had kicked off focusing on the story Gayle Giacomo and her daughter Christy Pereira, both of Bridgewater, who have re-launched their 32-year-old beauty salon and want to make it a big success. They are both smart, gracious women.

Instead, it seems to us that producer Endemol TV decided to concentrate on the battle between makeup artist Olivia Blois Sharpe, of Montville, who looks just like Snooki of “Jersey Shore,” and hair stylist Tracy DiMarco of East Hanover. At least, that’s what the first episode was abouit. That just makes “Jerseylicious” seem like a lot of other Jersey reality shows.

We know Style is trying to draw in younger women by concentrating on Olivia and Tracy, but we frankly are more interested in pretty Gayle (she in her 50s, our demo).

Anyway, even before the ratings came out, we suspected the show might be in trouble when we read a post on the story we did for NewJerseyNewsroom.com on the “Jerseylicious” premiere party.

“I personally enjoyed ‘Jersey Shore.’, but I think bringing on this show is pushing it!” wrote Nikki Dolce, a hair stylist from Scottsdale (our favorite place in the world). “We’ve had enough of New Jersey!”

‘Jerseylicious’ Cast Celebrates Show’s Debut, Along With The Homeshoppingista, With Hoboken Party

We just got back from the “Jerseylicious” premiere party in Hoboken, which we almost ditched Sunday night, out of frustration.

We got lost trying to find the venue — Lua, on where else but Sinatra Drive — and asked at least five people how to get to this restaurant, to no avail. Finally, the car attendants at the W Hotel gave us some accurate directions, and we made it to the party.

It was a rather balmy night here in the NY metro area, and the restaurant is on the Hudson River almost directly across from the Empire State building. The view was beautiful. But we digress. We were working, covering the party for our blog and NewJerseyNewsroom.com.

The place was packed with lots of young Jersey girls wearing thigh-high dresses and showing a lot of cleavage. We figured we’d never be able to scout out the “Jerseylicious” cast, who we interviewed in December for NewJerseyNewsroom.com, and if we did, it would be too noisy to interview them.

But we found the PR person, and she took us back to a roped-off VIP area where many of the cast members of the new Style Network show were talking to the press. While we were at the shindig we didn’t see makeup artist Olivia Blois Sharpe, the “Jerseylicious” cast member who looks a lot like Snooki from MTV’s “Jersey Shore.”

We did speak to the mother-and-daughter team who own and run the Gatsby Salon, where the reality show “Jerseylicious” is set.

The mother, flame-haired Gayle Giacomo, was wearing a sexy, low-cut long flowery print gown. She said she had bought it two 1/2 years ago to wear to her daughter Christy Pereira’s wedding, but then never did. Christy was there, wearing a black BCBG V-necked dress.

Giacomo said she hadn’t watched the first “Jerseylicious” episode yet.

“I’ve been so busy I said I’ll just wait and see it on TV,” she said.

But Pereira had seen it and said she liked it. The New York Times gave the show a drubbing this weekend. But Pereira said that even though she and her mom hope people like the show, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Next up was hairdresser Tracy DiMarco, who is essentially the villain in “Jerseylicious.” On the show, she basically says she hates Sharpe and is going to make her life miserable at the Gatsby. But DiMarco, dressed in what looked like a tiger print dress, was charming and sweet to us (she said we looked beautiful, and with us flattery will get you everywhere).

“I’m only mean to people I don’t like, or people who are mean to other people,” DiMarco told us. “I don’t like Olivia. That’s very obvious.”

She told us her mom has been keeping a book of press clippings of the show, which have included the cover of the New York Post’s TV Week section Sunday.

“I hope everyone likes me, even though I’m a little bit of a nasty bitch,” DiMarco told us, laughing.

We also spoke to hairstylists Anthony Lombardi, the only male member of the “Jerseylicious” crew, and Gigi Liscio. Lombardi was wear a white porkpie hat that he said he picked up in Bloomingdale’s that day. We kidded him about The Times review, which said he was the best-looking member of the cast.

“I know, The New York Times loved me,” Lombardi said. “I bought seven copies of it.”

“I got to hear this all day,” his pretty brunette wife said.

But she then waxed on about what a great guy he is. The day we can say all this about the man we’re with is the day we can stop saying those novenas praying for Mr. Right.

“I’m very proud of him,” Patty said. “He’s very successful. He’s the most beautiful man I’ve laid eyes on. He’s the father of my son. He’s a fabulous husband, a fabulous husband. I couldn’t ask for anybody better, for my son and myself.”

Wow, what an endorsement! They have a 13-month-old son, and live in Fairfield. Lombardi also owns the Anthony Robert Salon in Verona.

In the show Liscio’s boyfriend Frankie comes off as a tough, old-style Italian guy, looking to be served hand and foot by Liscio. But in the middle of our interview, he walked up to Liscio and gave her a big kiss, then walked away. That rather endeared him to us.

“I want it all in life,” Liscio said. “I want my family, my career. I live in a fairy tale, yes, you can say that, but I won’t stop til I get it all. I’m very determined. I love him to death. That’s who I want it with.”

There were several TV sets at Lua, and when “Jerseylicious” came on at 10 p.m. the whole party started cheering. Unfortunately, there were so many people it was impossible to hear the sound on the episode.

And by that time, we had to head out to write our blog.

We’ll see how “Jerseylicious” does when the ratings come out Monday.

First Episode of ‘Jerseylicious’ Portrays Jersey Girls As Big Haired, Tan And Leopard Clad: Is That A Bad Thing?

Sorry we didn’t post Monday, but we’ve had a stomach virus for several days now that has really knocked us out.

But we did take time out last night to screen the first episode of Style Network’s “Jerseylicious,” the reality show we wrote about for NewJerseyNewsroom.com in December.

“Jerseylicious” is part of the new TV trend, which is reality shows flocking to the state to film us “load and proud” characters.

“Jerseylicious,” which debuts March 21 at 10 p.m., we have to sadly say will go a long way toward promoting every stereotype America has about us Jersey girls that you can imagine. It’s not as heavy-handed as “Jersey Shore,” but the lead “character,” Olivia Blois Sharpe, comes off a bit like Snooki on MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” with her long dark hair, tight short skirts, heavy eye makeup and super dark tan.

“I love the Jersey style,” Olivia says in the first “Jerseylicious” episode. “Big Hair. Long nails. Real tan. I swear I’m tanorexic.”

And in another seeming homage to “Jersey Shore,” Olivia is shown dancing up a storm at the 46 Lounge on Route 46 in Totowa, a venue we were always curious about but will now certainly avoid after seeing the clientele.

“If I could make a living off fist-pumping to house music, I’d be in there,” Olivia says. “I’d be in there like swimwear. But it’s really not going to pay my bills.”

That on-air Olivia is quite a different character than the quiet, rather subdued young woman we interviewed at the setting of the show, the Gatsby Salon in Green Brook, N.J. But hell, we all know reality TV isn’t reality, right?

Along the lines of Jersey being a small world, one of the first characters introduced in the premiere episode is Olivia’s best friend Briella, who our sister Karen knows. Blonde Briella is a stylist at the Denville hair salon Fusion, where Karen gets her hair done.

All reality shows have to have drama, and in “Jerseylicious” its the conflict between makeup artist Olivia and Tracy DiMarco, a stylist who is now with Olivia’s ex-boyfriend. Tracy, one of the show’s players that we didn’t get a chance to interview, makes no bones about her mission, which is to make Olivia’s life miserable.

Tracy has the “Jersey style” we are all supposed to be wearing here in the Garden State, if you believe the reality shows about us. “Leopard jacket, snakeskin shoes, welcome to Jersey,” Tracy says.

The show is about the attempt of Gayle Giacomo and her daughter Christy Pereira to relaunch and revitalize the Gatsby Salon, which they’ve moved to a new location a few doors down from their old space in a strip mall on Route 22. We interviewed Gayle and Christy, and they are class acts.

One “Jerseylicious” player that we didn’t get a chance to interview is stylist Gigi Liscio, who is a sweetheart. But she seems pretty much under the thumb of her boyfriend Frankie. The term “guido” is never used to describe him, but you decide when if that’s an apt description when you see him.

There’s a scene of Frankie and his dad sitting at the dinner table, reminding us of “Saturday Night Fever,” getting hot under the collar and demanding that they get fed by the women in the house. Muy Italian macho.

Our advice to Gigi: Dump him, ASAP.

And finally there’s the sole male cast member, Anthony Lombardi, who owns the Anthony Robert Salon in Verona. He’s seems to be the referee between Olivia and Stacy, and is working at Gatsby while his own place undergoes renovations. He’s downt to earth and charming, the proud dad of a new son.

“Jerseylicious” is having a premiere party the night its first episode airs on Style, March 21. It’s in Hoboken, and we’ll be there, if we can find the appropriate leopard jacket and snakeskin shoes.

‘Clean House’ Comes To Jersey, And We Write About Its Rescue Of A Cancer Survivor For NewJerseyNewsroom.com

We’ve been keeping very busy above and beyond this blog, working on our story about Style Network’s “Clean House” coming to Wayne, N.J., to help a cervical cancer survivor. The piece was just posted on NewJerseyNewsroom.com.

We interviewed Christine and Bill Benedict at their small Cape Cod home last Thursday, a house brimming over with a mess of clothes, papers, boxes, etc. Their sweet 9 1/2-year-old daughter Katherine was there, too.

This family went through a difficult period, for about 18 months or so, when Christine underwent more than a half dozen surgeries, chemo and radiation. During that time, her house spiraled into disarray. Housecleaning was just not a priority. But she is in remission now, and the house is such a disaster that the family can’t even have guests over anymore.

That’s why Christine, a fan of “Clean House,” contacted the show for a makeover. The filming of the episode started last week, when we were up in Wayne.

They are a delightful family, and their trials make us thankful for our own health. Christine, who has curly hair likes ours, won us over right away when we saw she read tarot cards. She had chakra stones out as well as white sage, which is burned to get rid of negative energy (we have to burn some of it in our condo to get rid of those bad layoff memories), and a quartz crystal, for clarity and focus (we have one near our bedside).

You know we believe in all that New Age, spiritual stuff. And Christine told us we had a good aura.

There was also a remarkable coincidence, or syncronicity, regarding this story. Before we went to Wayne, the Style Network PR people told us that Christine had had cancer.

So when we met Christine we asked her where she had been treated. She said Saint Barnabas Medical Center. We are currently volunteering in the corporate PR dept. for that hospital’s parent, the Saint Barnabas Health Care System. We work right across the street from the hospital.

We were surprised to hear that Christine had made a 45-minute trip each way daily for awhile to get treatment at Saint Barnabas in Livingston, a haul from her Wayne home.

Then — through no prompting on our part, we swear on our grandmothers’ graves — Christine replied, “They’re fabulous, and they are the premier female cancer center in the state.”

Quite a nice, unsolicted endorsement for Saint Barnabas.

We also took photos at the Benedict house, although our shots of “Clean House” hunk Matt Iseman — who was born in Englewood, N.J., and went to Princeton — came out blurry.

Anyway, read the story to find out why the material things that we and you are buying on QVC, HSN and ShopNBC don’t mean anything in the grand scheme of things. That’s what the Benedict familly found out.

Oxygen Jumps On the Jersey Reality-TV Bandwagon, In The Wake Of ‘Real Housewives Of New Jersey’ and ‘Jersey Shore,’ With ‘Jersey Couture’ Show

Well, we’ll be damned. Jersey girls rule on reality TV.

Our beloved Garden State, the new mecca for reality-TV producers, will be the site of yet another “docu-soap.” This one, in development by the women’s network Oxygen, has a working title of “Jersey Couture,” echoing the name of that overpriced brand for tween and teen girls, Juicy Couture.

The show was announced Sunday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, a shindig we attended last year, just two weeks before we were abuptly laid off. NewJerseyNewsroom.com just posted our story on “Jersey Couture.”

From what we understand, “Jersey Couture” is about an upscale Freehold, N.J., women’s formalwear shop, Diane & Co. It is owned by Diane Scali and her family.

“From canary yellow beaded sheaths to gold lamé, the Scali family offers over-the-top dresses to satisfy every girl’s special event needs,” Oxygen said in a press release.

New Jersey, once the butt of jokes, is now the new hot spot for reality-TV shows that in many cases play on stereotypes the rest of America has about us. We’ve had Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” TLC’s “Cake Boss” and “18 Kids and Counting,” and Style Network’s “Jerseylicious,” which debuts in March.

We wrote about this new trend in Jersey-set programming for NewJerseyNewsroom.com, where experts told us that TV producers believe that the Garden State’s “loud and proud” residents are perfect for reality-TV shows.

“Jerseylicious” is about the women who run the Gatsby Salon in Green Brook, N.J. We visited the place during one of the last weeks it was shooting in December, and filed a package of stories for NewJerseyNewsroom.com.

As for “Jersey Couture,” here’s the sketchy info that Oxygen has provided.

“With a no nonsense attitude, the Scali family’s extravagant dress store is the premiere glamour stop in New Jersey,” Oxygen said in its TCA press release. “Get ready for the Cinderella experience of a lifetime. Whether it’s for her bride’s maid’s needs or her high school prom frills, when it comes to ‘what to wear’ to that elegant affair, no one gets the job done like the ladies at Diane & Co.”

Remember that “Jersey Couture” is just in development, which means Oxygen has not committed yet to pick it up as a series.

We got the first scoop on “Jerseylicious,” the new reality TV show that Style Network that just finished shooting in December. The “comedy docu-soap” will premiere in March.

Apart from being The Homeshoppingista, we wear many hats, including writing about New Jersey-related TV shows for NewJerseyNewsroom.com,
where our package of stories on “Jerseylicious” was just posted.

“Jerseylicious” is the latest in a wave of reality programs to come out of the Garden State, with the most notable ones being the controversial piece of garbage “Jersey Shore” on MTV and Bravo’s hit “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.”

In early December on a Friday night we traveled to foreign territory for someone like us from North Jersey — Green Brook in Central Jersey — to go to Gatsby Salon. “Jerseylicious” is about Gayle Giacomo, the salon’s owner, who is trying to relaunch the business after moving it to a new space just a few doors down in a strip mall on Route 22.

Afte getting lost on Route 22, we finally found the beatiful new Gatsby and interviewed Giacomo, a pretty redhead with huge grey eyes; her daughter Christy Pereira, the salon’s manager; Olivia Blois Sharpe, the petite brunette with a penchant for lace leggings, leopard skin and low-cut tops, who is a makeup artist; and the only man in the “Jerseylicious” cast, a very lovable Anthony Lombardi, who got into the hairstyling business to meet chicks.

We felt right at home with these Jersey-bred group, who were down to earth and affable. Giacomo and her daughter Pereira are very close, and live only a mile apart in Bridgewater. Sharpe lives in Montville, and Lombardi resides in Fairfield. He also owns his own salon, Anthony Robert Salon, in Verona on Bloomfield Avenue, about five minutes from where we live in Montclair.

We don’t if “Jerseylicious,” and its tale of these Gatsby employees who range in age from their 50s to their 20s will be a hit, but it should generate a lot of interest among folks here in the Garden State. If you live in Jersey, who may know someone connected to the show.

We do. Our sister Karen goes to the Fusion salon in Denville, and one of the hairdressers there, Brielle, is roommates with Pereira! Brielle is in some of the scenes in “Jerseylicous.”

We go to Bangz salon on Montclair, and out hair stylist said that earlier this year, the producers of “Jerseylicious” were in Bangz, seeing it as a potential site for “Jerseylicious.” The Bangz staff had to fill out some questionnaires, but it did not pan out.

And Jersey residents may recognize places they have been on “Jerseylicious.” The show filmed at the upscale CoCo Pari boutique in Red Bank, where we couldn’t afford to shop even when we were employed.

“Jerseylicious” also shot at the 46 Lounge in Totowa. We’ve always wondered what the place was like, but if Sharpe goes there, it’s definitely too young a crowd for us.

We can’t wait to see how “Jerseylicious” turns out. We think it will portray New Jersey and its residents in a much warmer light than that crapola “Jersey Shore”: as down-to-earth, no-nonsense, unpretentious, hard-working, funny people — with our accent. And what’s wrong with leopard skin, anyhow? We love it.

Jersey Has Become A Reality-TV Mecca

If you’ve read this blog at all, you know we’re from Jersey, and proud of it. Who knew that characteristic would make the Garden State appealing to reality-show producers.

We talked to the TV experts — including a gentleman who trains folks to get on, and be on, reality shows, Robert Galinsky — for our story on why ‘Joisey’ (as some morons still say, trying to mock us) has become a reality-TV mecca. It’s posted on NewJerseyNewsroom.com.

Galinsky, founder of the New York Reality TV School, told us that producers like the fact that Jersey natives are “loud and proud.” That makes for fun reality TV.

Which reality shows are rooted here? First there was the Bravo hit “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” Then MTV’s controversial piece of garbage “Jersey Shore” made waves (get it) in Seaside Heights. On Wednesday New Jersey Italian American legislators called for Viacom to pull the plug on the trashy show.

On MTV2’s “School of Surf,” kids from Ocean City compete in the Red Bull’s Riders Cup.

TLC loves Jersey, with “Cake Boss” shot in a Hoboken bakery and “Table for 12” about a Marlboro family with two sets of twins and sextuplets.

And coming up next spring, in March, is Style Network’s “Jerseylicious,” about the owner and stylists at the Gatsby Salon in Green Brook. You’ll be hearing more about “Jerseylicious” shortly.

Big hair, leopard skin clothes, a lot of attitude and our own dialect — God, we love Jersey.

Is Martha Stewart Giving Out Dennis Basso’s QVC Faux Mink Throw Wednesday?

Fashion designer Dennis Basso had QVC’s Today’s Special Value Tuesday, a faux mink throw for $47.

On QVC’s 10 p.m. “Tuesday Night Gifts” show, Basso was on with host Lisa Mason. We were working on a story for NewJerseyNewsroom.com, so we were were only half listening.

But we heard Basso say he will be on the Martha Stewart (a native of Nutley, N.J.) show Wednesday.
