It’s 1 A.M., And QVC Makeup Queen Mally Has Gas

Put this in the category of “TMI,” too much information.

It’s 1 a.m. Friday on QVC, and makeup queen Mally Roncal so far has said three times that she has gas.

We’re going to start doing shots every time she says it from now on.

We also believe we heard her say that she had “tooted.”

Is Ex-Host Pam McCoy, And Her Clothing Line, Gone From ShopNBC?

We saw a Facebook post that said that Pam McCoy, a one-time ShopNBC host who became one of its apparel vendors, was losing that gig.

There were also several posts on the home shopping network’s Facebook page asking whether McCoy was no longer going to be selling clothes on the channel.

We tried to do due diligence, and emailed ShopNBC’s PR person to ask what was up.

Here is the response we got: crickets chirping. Nada.

So maybe you guys can get an answer out of ShopNBC.

McCoy and her husband Wes were longtime fixtures on ShopNBC, as a husband-and-wife host team. A few years back, they exited (or were pushed). Then Pam returned with a clothing collection.

Duh, New York Times: Did Apple Ruin Its Image By Going On HSN?

The knuckleheads in the U.S. press just can’t seem to get it through their thick noggins that home shopping networks are not longer just cubic zirconia emporiums. The latest example is the venerable, but totally out of touch, New York Times.

The broadsheet posted a blog Wednesday with the headline “Would a Home-Shopping TV Appearance Damage a High-End Brand?” It raises the question of whether Emmy-winning makeup artist Eve Pearl should appear on ShopNBC with her cosmetics line.

The blog says that Pearl worried “whether the mass sales platform offered a good fit for her high-end cosmetics.” We think that the very topic is more reflective of The Times’ attitude, and looking down its nose, at home shopping.

The blog then quotes three experts about whether they would advise Pearl to go on ShopNBC.

One of them, Bethany Karlyn, actually knew the score.

“Maintaining a high-end brand image in a home-shopping venue is not the challenge it once was,” she told The Times. “In fact, she’ll find herself in good company. The schlock impression has changed with high-end brands such as Elizabeth Arden, Benefit, Lancôme, Vincent Longo, Lorac and Shiseido, on HSN. On QVC, Perricone has a two-ounce product selling for $495.”

Not for nothing, but stellar brands such as Apple, Sony, Bobbi Brown, Dennis Basso, Robert Lee Morris, Judith Ripka — to name just a tiny few — don’t seem to be any worse for the wear by appearing on HSN and QVC.


HSN Doing Whitney Houston Special Nov. 5, With Music Impresario Clive Davis

HSN is doing a tribute to the late music legend, and fellow New Jersey native, Whitney Houston, the home shopping network said Wednesday.

“HSN Live Presents Whitney Houston’s Greatest Hits” will premiere Nov. 5 at 11 p.m.

Music industry power and Houston’s friend and advisor, Clive Davis, will appear on HSN to give his first network interview regarding Whitney since her passing in February, according to the network.

“Through his compelling stories and unique insight, HSN will celebrate the life and talent of this amazing artist,” HSN said in a press release.

The special event will also feature an interview with legendary producer David Foster, who will discuss with Houston on such hits as “I Will Always Love You,” “I Have Nothing” and “Run To You,” among others. HSN said it will pay tribute to Houston with songs, music videos, and photographs, as well as television and film clips.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to celebrate the work of one of the most legendary singers of our time, Whitney Houston,” Andy Sheldon, HSN’s executive vice president of Television, Live Events and Creative, said in a canned statement. “HSN’s core is about storytelling and we look forward to telling the story of Whitney Houston’s amazing life and career like no one else can. In partnership with RCA Records, we are able to provide her fans a unique way to remember the superstar.”

The HSN Live special includes the premiere of Whitney Houston’s greatest hits compilation, “I Will Always Love You: The Best of Whitney Houston,” produced by Davis. The exclusive 2-disc bundle features Houston’s Grammy Award®-winning hits such as “You Give Good Love,” “Saving All My Love For You,” “How Will I Know,” “I’m Every Woman,” “Greatest Love Of All,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” “So Emotional,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “I Will Always Love You” and “My Love Is Your Love,” among many others.

ShopNBC’s Suzanne Somers Kicks Off Morning Talk Show Wednesday

Controversial entrepreneur, best-selling author and ShopNBC vendor Suzanne Somers has another gig to add to her resume: morning talk show host.

Somers, now 65, tomorrow, Wednesday, is launching a daily program, “The Suzanne Show,” that airs at 7 a.m. on Lifetime Television, The New York Post reported last weekend.

“It’s exactly what I love doing; providing cutting-edge health information wrapped in glamour and entertainment,” the perennial blond bombshell told The Post.

Somers’ controversial advocacy of alternative medicine has won her a lot of critics, that’s for sure. In fact, that’s why Somers has taken an unusual path to get her show on the air. Typically, producers will cut a deal to do a show for a TV network, or will syndicate their program, so that it airs on TV stations across the country.

But Somers, suspecting that her edgy opinions would turn off advertisers, decided to purchase time on Lifetime and then find sponsors herself. She told The Post that to her surprise, there was an overflow of advertisers interested.

Somers is a longtime home shopping network vendor who spent many years hawking her diet and health food, exercise gear, makeup and apparel on HSN before moving over to ShopNBC.

What the heck is ShopNBC doing? What is its brand?

We peeked at the No. 3 home shopping network’s website tonight to see what its Today’s Top Value was. We were surprised to see that Vicki Lawrence, who was one of comedian Carol Burnett’s partners in crime on her hilarious TV show, was on the air.

Lawrence was hawking a 19-episode DVD set, “The Carol Burnett Show: Carol’s Favorites” 19-Episode DVD Set & Memory Book. It’s $55.

Jewelry Television Partners With Brick-And-Mortar Retailer Tuesday Morning

Here’s a new one on Jewelry Television: It’s partnering with a brick-and-mortar store.

JTV, which trekked to the Big Apple yesterday to do a press event for its new Marilyn Monroe jewelry collection, is teaming up with Tuesday Morning. We’ve got one of its stores in my sister’s town in New Jersey, Whippany.

Tuesday Morning sells all kinds of goods, from bras to leather chairs.

JTV and Tuesday Morning are doing a joint “Treasure Hunt” sweepstakes.

“Why are Tuesday Morning and Jewelry Television teaming up?” the home shopping network’s website says.”We’re both dedicated to offering unbelievable values on fine quality merchandise. From premium brands in housewares, gifts and apparel, to the finest jewelry and gemstones, you’re sure to find a treasure you can’t live without.”

Hilary Joy Premieres New Jewelry Collection On HSN Thursday

HSN jewelry vendor Hilary Joy Diaz is debuting a fine jewelry collection under her Hilary Joy Collection banner this Thursday.

“There are some very amazing pieces such as a 14/10 oval aquamarine ring that is the color of the sky,” Diaz said in an email.

“It is really top quality. Also I have a hot pink topaz with chrome diopside that is to die for. The cobalt blue drusy surrounded by over 100 machine cut white topaz is a really amazing set also. I am using five textures now and they are royal bamboo, caviar, wave, French lace and my original basketweave.”

Giuliana Rancic To Donate Part Of Her HSN Sales To Women’s Cancer Group

We’ve reported on this already, but HSN issued its official press release Monday on Giuliana Rancic launching a clothing
line on the home shopping network. The big premiere of “G by Giuliana Rancic” is Sept. 21.

“Creating G by Giuliana Rancic is my dream and I am so excited to bring my collection to HSN,” E! Entertainment host Rancic said in a canned statement. “My designs are all about fit, function and of course fabulous style … three things that every woman needs in their wardrobe.”

Designed to flatter the body and highlight a woman’s best assets, the G by Giuliana Rancic collection uses classic fabrics and features pieces designed with the perfect fit and the utmost quality in mind. Giuliana will donate a portion of total sales to Bright Pink, a national non-profit that focuses on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women while providing support for high-risk individuals.
