Former Lifetime Network CEO Andrea Wong Joins Board Of QVC’s Parent, Liberty Media

April 29, 2010

The cable industry is a small, tight-knit world, and you never know who is going to end up where. But we learned Thursday that Andrea Wong, former president and CEO of Lifetime Entertainment Services, was named to Liberty Media’s board.

Liberty is QVC’s parent company.

“Andrea’s extensive experience in media and expertise in programming will be valuable in helping guide Liberty,” Liberty CEO Greg Maffei said in a canned statement. “We look forward to her contributions as our newest board member.”

Wong had joined Lifetime from The Walt Disney Co.’s ABC, where during her 14-year tenure she served in a variety of roles, most notably as an executive vice president where her responsibilities included reality programming.

We interviewed Wong several times when she was at Lifetime, and she had a bumpy tenure at the women’s channel. She brought over Bravo’s hit “Project Runway,” but only after a prolonged legal battle. The ratings for the network were good.

Then last year Lifetime’s joint ownership, Disney and A&E Networks, was unraveled. Wong left this week, and her vacancy was filled Tuesday with an A&E Nets veteran, History Channel’s GM Nancy Dubuc.

Dubuc is a talented, ambitious executive that we once profiled.

We wonder how active a voice Wong will have regarding QVC.

Before Lifetime, Wong worked in the areas of corporate planning and high-yield finance. Wong obtained her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Will Tori Spelling Be The New Oprah? She Has A Daytime Talk Show In the Works

April 21, 2010

My mother and sister are big fans of actress/HSN vendor Tori Spelling, and we were talking about her over lunch Tuesday. Spelling was just back on HSN last week.

My mom was saying that Oxygen had just run a day-long marathon of Spelling’s reality show, “Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood,” and what a great interior designer the thin blonde is. Mom also talked about how emotional Spelling is, often bursting into tears.

During the course of this conversation, we was wondering how “Beverly Hills 90201” alum has the time to do all she does, namely creating fashion jewelry for HSN, doing a reality show, decorating and furnishing a home, writing books, acting, and raising kids.

Now less than 24 hours later, we hear that Spelling, the daughter of the late TV producer Aaron Spelling, is looking for yet another gig: a daytime talk show for ABC.

The Los Angeles Times broke the news and reports Wednesday that the show would pair Spelling with a male co-host. Spelling’s show would angle to be a replacement for the slot left open when Oprah Winfrey’s syndicated program goes off the air next fall.

Let’s see what happens.

Home Design TV Stars Tracy Hutson Of ‘Extreme Home Makeover,’ HGTV’s Genevieve Gorder and ‘Flipping Out”s Anal-Retentive Nut Job Jeff Lewis Design Home Collections For QVC

February 14, 2010

HGTV's Genevieve Gorder is one of three TV home design stars doing home collections for QVC

Why does QVC post press releases on its Web site two days after they are dated? And on a weekend, no less. You tell us.

We check QVC’s Web site “Media” section several times every day, and this press release was not up there until this afternoon today, Valentine’s Day. Note that it is dated Feb. 12. And it’s a good story.

QVC has put together a nice roster of TV home design stars — Tracy Hutson of ABC’s “Extreme Home Makeover: Home Edition,” Genevieve Gorder of HGTV’s “Design Star” and “Dear Genevieve,” and nut case Jeff Lewis of Bravo’s “Flipping Out” — to do home collections for it. Those shows will start debuting this week.

We have a cold, and our head feels like it’s going to fall off and our nose is as red as a valentine, so read the release yourself, pretty please. Here it is, verbatim:
