QVC Host Dan Wheeler’s Late Wife’s Service To Be Streamed

November 3, 2015

We just got back from vacation, where it was too difficult for us to blog, so this is our first words on the tragic death of QVC host Dan Wheeler’s wife Beth, 61. And we find we are without words.

As we suffered a horrendous loss, the death of our father earlier this year, and have friends who have lost loved ones recently, as well, one runs out of things to say. Your faith is tested. Dan is born-again, so he has God to turn to, but reading his heart-wrenching Facebook posts about the demise of the love of his life was beyond sad.

The late Beth Wheeler

The late Beth Wheeler

Here is one post:

I am heartbroken and my spirit is crushed. Today I had several panic attacks and have cried until I can’t breathe. I know this first year without will be so hard. First Thanksgiving, first anniversary. First Christmas, New Years, her birthday, it goes on and on. But I’m told someday it will slowly get better.

That reminded us of our own thoughts about facing the upcoming holiday season without our father.

Then this from Dan:

I guess my new normal is to wake up crying. My heart has a giant hole in it. My wife, @Elizabeth Ann Wheeler was not only the Love of my Life but she was and is my hero. My daughters have tattoos on their wrists that say “Faith” and “Hope.”

Beth’s wrist says “Love.” She is love and she loved me unconditionally for 37 years. The past 6 months have been difficult. The past 5 weeks unbearable. But these days of planning her life celebration and burial are really impossible as a man.

But God is carrying me and my family. “Now abideth faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is LOVE!” I miss you so much my sweet Cakies! (my nickname for Beth)

But QVC customers will be able to view the services for Beth, who died of cancer. Dan posted this:

Beth’s Celebration service will stream live tomorrow on the Internet and you can watch it at 11am ET from anywhere in the world @www.cfdowningtown.com/wheeler.

My wife always preferred the background but it is time that moves “center stage” so the world can learn about this amazing woman. Hope you can join us for this incredible service!

Our heart goes out to Dan and his family, and to all victims of cancer.

QVC Debuts App For Apple TV

November 3, 2015

QVC has debuted its app that will permit customers to make purchases directly through Apple TV with just a click of the remote.

QVC for Apple TV will be available in the United States immediately upon the release of the all-new Apple TV, with Great Britain and Germany to follow in the coming weeks.

“As consumers continue to view television programming in new and diverse ways, we are excited to leverage the video and commerce capabilities of Apple’s TvOS to help our customers further engage with the QVC community,” said Alex Miller, QVC’s senior vice president of digital commerce.

“This new offering demonstrates our ongoing commitment to bringing the QVC experience to life on today’s most innovative platforms.”

After downloading the QVC app from the App Store for Apple TV, QVC customers will be able to view live programming on QVC as well as QVC PLUS, the retailer’s second broadcast channel in the U.S. that offers unique live and pre-produced programming.

For a streamlined purchasing experience, a “speed buy” button shown directly on screen during programming will allow registered customers to instantly view product details and purchase the item being showcased with one click or tap of their finger, without having to enter their credit card and shipping information.

Customers can also browse through the product carousel at the bottom of the screen to view additional details and purchase items previously featured onair.

“With the all-new tvOS operating system, we were able to create an innovative, immersive shopping experience on Apple TV,” said Venkatesh Natarajan, QVC’s vice president of IT commerce platforms. “QVC Apple TV will continue to evolve, offering new features and capabilities over time.”

Earlier this year, QVC introduced the QVC for Apple Watch app concurrently with Apple Watch availability, enabling customers to view, with a quick glance at their wrist, QVC’s most popular content — the item currently on-air and the Today’s Special Value®, QVC’s best find of the day.

In 2014, QVC introduced Apple’s Touch IDTM sensor technology on the QVC app for iPhone, giving customers the option to log in to their QVC accounts with the tap of a finger. QVC also introduced new second screen features on its QVC app for iPad, enabling live broadcast viewing in the app and synchronizing product display in the app with the item being shown on air, establishing the iPad’s use as a companion device to live programming.

The QVC app for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and now Apple TV are available for free on the respective App stores. New Apple TV owners can download the QVC app from the App Store for Apple TV.

QVC Host Dan Wheeler’s Ill Wife Improves, Comes Home From Hospital

October 22, 2015

Someone heard our prayers.

QVC host Dan Wheeler’s beloved wife Beth, who is ill with cancer, came home on Wednesday after several weeks in a Philly hospital.

BETH

It seemed touch and go for awhile for Beth and Wheeler, a devout Christian, called for all his QVC fans to keep praying for her. We are no experts on cancer, but she was receiving blood platelets and initially it was not working out well.

But she finally took a turn for the better, hence her discharge from the hospital.

“The signs and balloons are in place, the wheelchair is here and the ramp has been built to my front door,” Wheeler posted on Facebook.

“My baby is getting an ambulance ride home today!!! Miracles are happening everyday! Praise the Lord and thank you all for your prayers! After three weeks of storming heaven collectively with you our QVC FAMILY, she is coming home!!!! I’m so happy I can hardly contain myself!”

Either can we, Dan.

Ex-QVC Host Kathy Levine Bows ‘Loud’ Line On Evine Live

October 22, 2015

FB friend Charlene tipped us off to some news today: Former QVC queen host Kathy Levine is debuting a clothing line on Evine Live tomorrow.

Levine has been acting as a kind of sometimes host or commentator on Evine Live, but we weren’t aware that she had a collection cooking for the No. 3 home shopping network.

Lisa Robertson posted this photo of her and Kathy Levine on Facebook.

Lisa Robertson posted this photo of her and Kathy Levine on Facebook.

Another QVC refugee, List Robertson, did a post on Facebook about Levine’s new collection.

“GUESS WHAT?!!!! My friend Kathy Levine is debuting her new clothing line on EVINE Live!,” Robertson wrote. “It’s tomorrow night at 6p ET and she is really excited about it!!! Good luck, Kathy!!!!!”

Here’s what Levine had to say on Facebook:

For years, you have been saying how much you wish I would return to TV. I have always wanted to come back with something to call my own.

Last summer I met with EVINE Live’s VP of Apparel in NY and he introduced me to a super manufacturer. She got my vision right away. Easy, casual tops with a young hip edge, designed longer, to hide the bad and accentuate the good, for all sizes and all shapes.

Most of these ideas were straight from my own closet, just needing a few tweaks here and there. The clothing line was born with fabulous genuine gemstone jewelry created to complement it. (Heart lovers rejoice)! Sneak a peek – http://bit.ly/1OxF8v9

Kathy Levine Out Loud!!! KLOL is here!

Shop, share, smile and laugh out loud with me on Thursday, October 22nd at 6pm ET.

When Levine left QVC, and never got that talk show she had mentioned, she became a vendor on either QVC or HSN, we can’t remember which. Levine did costume jewelry and apparel, and quite frankly, it was not impressive.

Let’s hope she does better on Evine Live.

We do dig the gemstone sterling silver heart necklace that she’s hawking as part of her line.

QVC, ‘Today’ Hunt For New Products Nears End

September 29, 2015

QVC finally got around to issuing a press release on its collaboration with NBC’s morning “Today” show,” as both entities search across the country for new products for the home shopping network.

The hunt started in August, and this week nine budding entrepreneurs will showcase their innovative inventions on “Today’s Next Big Thing” a collaboration between QVC TODAY to discover the next big product to be sold on QVC.

As part of the initiative, inventors were asked to submit their creative ideas. From those submissions, nine finalists were chosen across three different categories including: apparel and accessories; home, households and pets; and kitchen and gadgets.

Starting today, Tuesday, the products in each category will be pitched live on “Today” to a panel of judges that includes Doug Howe, QVC’s Executive Vice President of Merchandising, Jill Martin, “Today” contributor and Creative Director of QVC’s G.I.L.I. fashion and accessories line and Al Roker, “Today” anchor.

Viewers can vote on their favorite product each day, beginning Tuesday, today, by going to Today.com.

This Friday, the inventors of the product receiving the most votes in each category will have one last chance to win over the judges and explain why their product deserves to join the ranks of QVC’s best-selling items.

The overall winner selected by the judges will sell their product live on QVC this Saturday 3 at 10 a.m.

“The joy of discovery and the power of storytelling is a big part of who we are and what we do at QVC,” Howe said.

“Together with ‘Today,’ we are able to collaborate with entrepreneurs and inventors in an effort to help make their products successful while providing the winner with a powerful platform to tell their story, and distribute their products on a national scale.”

Here’s the boilerplate on QVC’s involvement with entrepreneurs.

Over the past 29 years, QVC has launched and fostered the growth of some of today’s most successful brands. TODAY’s Next Big Thing aligns with QVC’s commitment to find new products and inspiration for customers, and supports QVC Sprouts, which is QVC’s ongoing crowd-sourced product search.

They seek the best up-and-coming products from inventors and entrepreneurs, giving those with a retail-ready product the opportunity to be sold on QVC.com and the chance to grow their businesses through a scalable and nurturing process.

Tune in to Saturday Morning Gifts on Saturday, October 3 at 10 AM (ET) for a firsthand look as the TODAY’S Next Big Thing top contender showcases their winning product. Visit QVC.com to purchase the products of all nine finalists. To learn more about QVC Sprouts, visit http://www.QVCSprouts.com.

Chucklehead Indicted In Multi-Million Dollar Invoice Scam At QVC

September 25, 2015

We are probably the only people that over-pay our taxes, because we don’t want to get in trouble. So it always amazes us when knuckleheads get involved in scams and never seem to expect to get caught.

Maybe they figure if Bernie Madoff got away with robbing people for years, they can pull it off.

Yet Douglas Rae, a former QVC employee, allegedly defrauded the home shopping network of millions of dollars by submitting phony invoices. Here is the press release from the U.S. Attorney in Pennsylvania.

Three Charged With Defrauding West Chester Company Of Millions

PHILADELPHIA – Douglas S. Rae, 58, of Bethlehem, PA, was charged today by indictment with participating in several schemes to defraud his former employer, a company based in West Chester, PA, of millions of dollars. Rae is charged with seven counts of mail fraud, 25 counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and three counts of money laundering, announced United States Attorney Zane David Memeger.

In related matters, also charged today by information were John R. Hodde, 53, of Aubrey, TX, and Michael H. Keppler, 55, of Ridgewood, NJ. Hodde and Keppler are separately charged with two counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud for their alleged participation, along with Rae, in schemes to defraud Rae’s former employer.

According to the indictment, between 2006 and 2013, Rae devised a scheme to defraud his employer by submitting invoices from two companies he controlled for goods and services that were never delivered. Rae controlled the bank accounts for the two companies, Lighting Equipment Sales and Service, Inc. (“LESS”), and Lighting Products International, Inc. (“LPI”). He caused the victim company to pay over $900,000 for bogus LESS and LPI invoices, and he took the proceeds for his own personal use.

The charging documents further allege that from 2007 through 2013, Rae and Hodde devised a scheme to defraud Rae’s employer by submitting bogus invoices from Hodde’s employer, Barbizon Capitol, Inc. (“Barbizon”).

One of the ways the men allegedly carried out this scheme began with Hodde allowing Rae to use Hodde’s corporate credit card account, which Rae used to for personal expenditures such as home appliances, airline tickets for him and his wife to visit their vacation home, personal electronics, and dental services.

It is further alleged that Rae and Hodde then worked together to create bogus invoices from Barbizon to Rae’s employer for purported product sales, when in fact Barbizon did not supply any of the product.

Rae and Hodde created the bogus invoices in amounts to reimburse Barbizon for all of Rae’s personal expenditures on the Barbizon credit card account, plus an approximately 10% mark-up, which Barbizon kept. In this manner, Rae and Hodde allegedly caused the victim company to pay over $560,000 for bogus invoices submitted to it from Barbizon.

The other way Rae and Hodde allegedly carried out their scheme involved Rae submitting bogus invoices from LESS and LPI to Barbizon, and then at Rae’s direction, Hodde allegedly generated corresponding bogus invoices from Barbizon to Rae’s employer, along with an approximate 10% mark-up for Barbizon to keep.

Neither LESS, LPI, nor Barbizon supplied any of the product for which the victim company was invoiced. In this manner, according to the charging documents, Rae and Hodde caused the victim company to pay over $200,000 for the bogus invoices. Barbizon retained approximately 10% of those proceeds, and the remainder were forwarded to LESS and LPI and deposited into bank accounts controlled by Rae.

Between 2010 and 2012, Rae and Keppler allegedly devised a scheme to defraud Rae’s employer by submitting bogus invoices from Keppler’s company, Keppler Engineers, LLC (“Keppler Engineers”). Rae directed Keppler to generate invoices from Keppler Engineers to Rae’s employer that contained particular item descriptions, descriptions of services, and specific prices, and Keppler did as directed.

Rae and Keppler caused those invoices to be submitted to the victim company for payment. The victim company paid Keppler Engineers for the invoices, and then Keppler Engineers paid all but approximately 10% of the proceeds to LPI, which Rae deposited into bank accounts he controlled.

Neither Keppler Engineers nor LPI provided the products or services to the victim company. According to the charging documents, Rae and Keppler caused the victim company to pay over $170,000 for the bogus invoices from Keppler Engineers.

Rae is further charged with conducting three separate financial transactions of over $10,000 each in criminally derived proceeds.

If convicted, Rae faces up to 20 years in prison on each count of mail fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and up to ten years in prison on each count of money laundering.

He also faces up to three years of supervised release, full restitution, a fine, a $3,500 special assessment, and criminal forfeiture. Hodde and Keppler each face up to 20 years in prison on each count of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, full restitution, three years of supervised release, a $500,000 fine, and a $200 special assessment.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Nancy E. Potts.

Oops, She Did It Again: Jessica Simpson’s A Train Wreck On HSN

September 18, 2015

We hate to say we told you so, but we told you so. We warned you about Jessica Simpson in a recent blog.

Jessica Simpson, A Disaster On QVC, Comes To HSN

We missed the Texas blonde’s appearance Thursday night on HSN, but apparently it went about as well as her brief stint on QVC a few years ago. In other words, she was a train wreck.

These boots are made for walking, and Jessica Simpson should keep walking away from home shopping.

These boots are made for walking, and Jessica Simpson should keep walking away from home shopping.

TMZ already skewered Simpson, describing her as “dazed” and “confused” during her HSN debut.

“Jessica seemed out of it during her 2-hour sell-a-thon, giggling and slurring,” TMZ wrote. Poor Colleen Lopez!

http://www.tmz.com/2015/09/17/jessica-simpson-drunk-weird-home-shopping-network/#ixzz3m3whe1f2

She apparently had a lot of sellouts, but as QVC vet Steve Bryant posted on Facebook, “Don’t let the sell outs fool you. It’s common practice to bring in very small quantities to get as many sell out stories as possible. The real test of any product line starts in the 2nd and 3rd show.”

http://www.hsn.com/products/jessica-simpson-andrea-faux-fur-vest/7902751

Steve is the most astute expert on the home shopping world that we know, and he also wrote, “Jessica Simpson on HSN is as big a cluster fuck as she was on QVC. It’s like the host is talking to a crayon. In my opinion, she is acting very impaired. Hey TV Shopping Channels, celebrities aren’t the answer anymore!”

Here were some of the comments from Steve’s Facebook page:

“Was flipping channels and saw the train wreck of Jessica Simpson. She appeared to me to be stoned or inebriated. Very, very sad. I give the host credit for having to deal with her and her inferior line of apparel.”

“Jessica is drunk or something and that swaying and slurring her words is painful to watch. I just messaged them saying get her off the air. Her stuff is selling but this is really bad.”

“She is on drugs to get skinny there was talk about her going to rehab.”

“Slurred Speech Simpson Special?”

“Steve…after I read your post I had to tune in. Your assessment was spot on. It was actually uncomfortable to watch. She’s obviously hammered or high. If she’s not, I would be completely surprised. Also, I think I lost several IQ points just by watching for a few minutes.”

Ink Artist Kat Von D Brings Beauty Line To QVC

September 18, 2015

People probably won’t agree with us, but we’re giving props to QVC for bringing in tattoo artist Kat Von D to launch a beauty line.

Von D, who was featured in the TLC reality show “LA Ink,” is pretty edgy for the home shopping network. But at least QVC is trying something different.

Von D’s products include eye shadow, studded lipstick, Immortal Lash Mascara and “Lock-it Tattoo Foundation and Blush.”

We know people who hate tattoos, but we don’t. Our late dad had one, and our cousin and his wife are covered in ink, sleeves and more. To each his own.

QVC.com describes Von D as “one part rock ‘n roll edge, one part artistic visionary … a renowned tattoo artist, she’s bringing her bold sense of style to cosmetics.”
Now will QVC viewers welcome Von D? That’s another question.

“I am very grateful to be championing an initiative supporting the fight against a disease that has impacted so many lives, including those in my own family,” commented Burke. “As a woman, this cause is especially important to me because it empowers women to shop for something that will make themselves and others feel good.”

As part of QVC’s ongoing commitment to support charitable causes that promote the success and wellness of women through the power of relationships, this event has generated more than $47 million, to date, for breast cancer research and education institutions.

“Each October, QVC and the Fashion Footwear Association of New York come together to stand in solidarity for an important mission,” says Mike George, President and CEO, QVC. “We are honored to have Cheryl Burke’s support this year to help promote and spread awareness for such an important cause.
