Hip-Hop Singer Nicki Minaj Coming To HSN With Fragrance

June 27, 2014

Look many female singers before her, hip-hop star Nicki Minaj is coming to HSN next month to hawk her new fragrance.

Minaj, who has apparently toned down her Technicolor hair, will be on the air July 11 with Minajesty: Exotic Edition.

Here’s the scoop from an HSN.com blog:

Beauty

Fragrance is a woman’s best accessory because it makes you feel more confident. It’s sexy and it makes you feel unique.
Nicki Minaj

With the launch of her new fragrance, her new album, and more natural look, Nicki Minaj is revisiting her roots. We got the chance to learn a little bit more about Nicki, her background and success with a recent Q&A.

Q: You’ve been speaking about going back to your roots. What does that mean to you?

A: “As it relates to music, it just means to make sure I remain in a place where the music always comes from my heart and that nothing else but passion is driving what I do. The PinkPrint will be a very passionate album.”

Q: Can you tell us one person you admire or look to as a mentor, and why?

A: “I admire and feel mentored by Lil Wayne. I’ve always loved his work ethic & unique talent. He’s been my biggest teacher in rap music.”

Q: What does a “Day-in-the-Life of Nicki Minaj” look like?

A: “It looks like long hours in the studio, tons of calls and emails all day, lots of laughs with my best friends, approving photos, approving mixes to songs that will make the album, trying on clothes for upcoming events, and always less sleep than my body needs.”

Q: What one piece of advice would you give to a woman who is struggling with self-confidence?

A: “I’d tell her that she was beautiful whether she realizes it or not and that the moment she begins to believe in herself, the possibilities in life are endless.”

Minaj follows in the footsteps of singers such as Mary K. Blige and Jennifer Lopez, who have also hawked their scents on HSN.

Rocker Rod Stewart Returns To HSN For Live Performance Of Christmas Album

September 14, 2012

Baby-boomer rocker Rod Stewart is back, at HSN.

Stewart will do his second live performance on HSN when he returns on Oct. 26 to debut his first-ever holiday CD, “Merry Christmas, Baby” before it officially drops on Oct. 30.

In 2010, Rod Stewart shattered HSN music records with his exclusive debut of “Fly Me To The Moon: Volume V,” selling more than 25,000 units during his one-hour performance. He’s still one of the largest-selling music artist on HSN.

“We are thrilled to have Rod return to HSN to launch his first holiday CD with us,” Andy Sheldon, HSN’s executive vice president of Television, Live Events and Creative said in a canned statement.

“Rod knows how to engage an audience with his incredible voice and irresistible charm and we look forward to another successful appearance when he takes the stage with David Foster in October. ‘HSN Live’ has become a highly respected launch platform within the music industry and we are excited about the high caliber of artists that want to debut their latest projects.”

Surprisingly, there was no canned quote from Stewart. But there was one from his record label.

“We are excited to bring Rod Stewart back to the HSN audience,” said Mike Rittberg, vice president if Artist Development & Promotion for Verve Music Group. “They’ve been a great partner for Rod in the past and this is a great opportunity to showcase Rod’s talent and this amazing new CD for millions of fans.”

HSN customers will have the opportunity to pre-order an exclusive 2-disc bundle for $14.95, which includes the new release, “Merry Christmas, Baby” and a “Best Of” CD that features Stewart’s greatest hits, including “Maggie May,” “Reason to Believe” and “Twistin the Night Away.”

“Merry Christmas” has holiday classics, including duets with Michael Buble on “Winter Wonderland”; Mary J. Blige on “We Three Kings”; and Cee-Lo Green for the title tune “Merry Christmas, Baby.” “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” is a “virtual” duet with Ella Fitzgerald featuring Chris Botti.

The balance of the tunes include “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”; “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”; Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,” “Blue Christmas,” “When You Wish Upon A Star,” “Silent Night” and “Auld Lang Syne.”

The album’s one original track, “Red-Suited Super Man,” is composed by Rod Stewart, David Foster and Amy Foster and features Trombone Shorty.

Prior to the HSN Live Concert Series event, a special pre-show will stream live on HSN’s Facebook page at 7:30 p.m., offering fans exclusive behind-the-scenes access as Stewart prepares to take the stage.

Facebook viewers will be able to watch exclusive content on HSN’s Rod Stewart Facebook tab and on HSN.com, to learn more about the inspiration behind “Merry Christmas, Baby.”

Immediately following his HSN concert, Stewart will perform a special encore for Facebook fans which will also include an exclusive post-show chat.

Mary J. Blige Charity Donations From HSN Perfume Sales Have Wafted Away, New York Post Claims

May 28, 2012

Singer Mary J. Blige, who broke sales records when she debuted per perfume “My Life” on HSN, is in a lot of hot water. Part of those fragrance sales were supposed to go to Blige’s charity, but it doesn’t look like they ever made it there.

The New York Post reported Sunday that Blige’s charity for women has “hundreds of thousands of dollars” unaccounted for; hasn’t filed all its federal tax returns; and has been named a defendant in two lawsuits.

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/mary_bilk_charity_sham_4xZmMuES6vfKT21oIq7TjI

The Post story talks about how part of the sales from “My Life” were supposed to go to her charity, but now those donations are missing.

“She (Blige) was promoting her fragrance, My life, which sold a record 60,000 bottles on the Home Shopping Network during its six-hour debut in 2010,” The Post wrote. “One dollar from each sale was supposed to benefit The Mary J. Blige and Steve Stoute Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now, known as FAWN.”

But according to The Post, “Where the $60,000 from the fragrance sale and other donations went is a mystery. The group’s 2010 annual report has nothing on its finances for that year.”

The lawsuits against the charity were filed by a group of musicians, who allege they were stiffed for $167,000 after performing at a gala; and by TD Bank, for a $250,000 loan it extended and was never repaid.

Not cool, Mary J.

Singer Mary J. Blige Returns To Peform Live On HSN Nov. 30

November 22, 2011

Grammy-winning singer Mary J. Blige will be back in the house at HSN Nov. 30 to perform a live concert and hawk her perfume.

Blige has been on HSN before, when she launched her fragrance. But now she will be singing at 12:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. EST, promoting her new album “My Life II … The Journey Continues (Act 1).”

“The fragrance is a lyrical composition of heady florals with undertones of woodsy warmth,” or so says HSN’s flowery press release. “My Life Blossom, Blige’s second fragrance, is a continuation of the My Life spirit in a softer, white floral accord with a warm vanilla heart. This line is the first celebrity fragrance collection from Mary J. Blige and the first celebrity fragrance to be developed by Carol’s Daughter.”

Here is Blige’s canned quote.

Queen Latifah Reigns On HSN As The Network Targets African-American Women Shoppers

August 29, 2011

Sorry we didn’t post all weekend, but we got derailed by a lady by the name of Irene. Flooding. No power. All on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in NOLA.

But we had to comment on the debut of Queen Latifah’s fashion line on HSN, with the Today’s Special, a suede hobo purse, on Saturday. Latifah, i.e. Dana Owens of East Orange, N.J., was a natural hawking her wares. As host Colleen Lopez pointed out, she really didn’t even have to be there, because Latifah was doing such a great job explaining her Queen Collection so well.

Latifah started out as a rapper and then moved on to acting and films with huge success (an Oscar nominee for “Chicago,” we believe). She’s a warm, down-to-earth, smart, beautiful woman, and she’s a big woman. And as she stated, she’s a sensitive Pisces. And she makes no excuses for her size.

Latifah said that she had been offered loads of money to do fashion lines before signing on with HSN, which she said “got” women. Latifah’s HSN line ranges in size from XS to 3X, and there is no label on it being for “plus-sized” women.

InStyle magazine this month mentions Latifah’s line, with a photo of a gorgeous draped dress that we were coveting.

What was especially uplifting were the many, many calls that Latifah got from African-American women, who said they admired her, her accomplishments and her style. Latifah’s fessed up to owning $3,000 purses, so even though her TS was $160, not cheap, it was considerably less expensive than what she is used to carrying.

HSN never markets this fact, but it has become a real promoter of African-American vendors. Artists, athletes and entrepreneurs including Iman, Serena Williams, Carol’s Daughter, Mary J. Blige, Natalie Cole, Antthony Design Originals, Sean Combs and Professor Amos are all on HSN’s roster.

And HSN used to have even more African-American vendors. Terry Lewis is a former HSN host who had a great line of classic designs, with great leather pants and skirts. Lewis’s fans still skewer HSN for not having her on the air anymore.

And Beyonce’s mother, Tina Knowles, once had a clothing line on HSN.

HSN also recently did a day that featured products tied to the premiere of the movie “The Help.”

We don’t see by effort by any of the other home shopping networks to target women of color, and we think it’s a great strategy on HSN’s part.

HSN To Promote New Movie ‘The Help’ With Collection Inspired By The Film

August 2, 2011

This week HSN will launch a multi-platform event that celebrates the style, fashion and decor inspired by the summer film “The Help,” the home shopping network said Monday.

Let’s hope “The Help” does better the other movie that HSN has promoted with its programming and products: The bomb “EAt, Pray, Love.”

“The Help” event will kick off starting Friday across all of HSN’s platforms, including television, HSN.com and HSN mobile.

“The Help,” presented by DreamWorks Pictures and Reliance Entertainment, in association with Participant Media and Imagenation Abu Dhabi, is distributed by Touchstone Pictures and will be released nationwide Aug. 10.

“HSN is proud to collaborate with DreamWorks Pictures to celebrate this powerful film as part of our ongoing entertainment strategy.” Bill Brand, HSN executive vice president of programming, marketing and business development said in a canned statement. We are excited to bring to life one of the biggest movies of the year on all of our platforms with exclusive content and unique products.”

Here is the boilerplate on the movie:

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a No. 1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon, “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award—nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny — three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s, who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk.

From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed — even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times. Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, “The Help” is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

HSN programming during “The Help” event will focus on the themes of fashion, American home decor, Southern-style cooking and beauty products. It will feature the launch of new personalities, designers and brands, including:

CR by Cynthia Rowley — exclusive fashion and accessories.

Lela Rose for HSN — 60’s style apparel with bold flowery prints and whimsical silhouettes.

Chef Martha Hall Foose — chef and food stylist for “The Help” will debut her cookbook “A Southerly Course: Menus and Recipes from Close to Home” and present a variety of classic Southern foods ranging from boneless stuffed chicken breasts to red velvet cakes and brewed ice teas.

Viking — known for their top-of-the-line major kitchen appliances, Viking will be showcasing their line of state-of-the-art hand-held appliances as part of the event.

In addition, the event will showcase products from Carol’s Daughter and Stila; culinary and home offerings from Emeril Lagasse, Jeffery Banks, and The Lee Bros; and jewelry from R.J. Graziano.

Mary J. Blige, a spokeswoman and investor in the Carol’s Daughter brand, will be expanding her fragrance collection with the launch of My Life Blossom, exclusively on HSN Aug. 13. The Grammy award-winning singer composed “The Living Proof, the theme song for “The Help” and will share personal anecdotes on working on the film when she appears on HSN.

Blige’s song is written from the point of view of the lead character Aibileen, the African-American maid who bravely shares her story. According to what we suspect is some hype in HSN’s press release, “Blige was in awe of the character’s fearlessness and deeply moved by the support of the women surrounding Aibileen in the film.”

Her canned quote:

I cried the most when I saw all of the women gathered together. They chose to walk in love and forgiveness. My personal connection to the themes in the film is the fact that my Aunt Lara belle was a maid who worked for a very wealthy white family and they loved her to death and she ultimately raised their children. To be able to speak to so many women with this song means a lot to me.

The events special features will include behind-the-scenes footage, videos, community boards and cast biographies, as well as an opportunity to buy an autographed copy of the book, can be found at http://www.hsn.com, keyword: the help.

Singer Mary J. Blige To Premiere Second Fragance On HSN

July 13, 2011

Mary J. Blige is back on HSN.

Following the exclusive debut of her first fragrance, My Life, on HSN last year, Blige is expanding her fragrance collection with the launch of My Life Blossom, “a creamy, addictive floral fragrance,” on HSN Aug. 13.

The release says:

My Life Blossom is an evolution of the original My Life fragrance. The original scent was the most successful fragrance launch in HSN’s history and recently won two FiFi Awards. The new fragrance follows Mary on her journey of self-discovery, as she celebrates her inner peace, integrity and assuredness. Mirroring Mary’s personal experiences, My Life Blossom was developed to exude confidence, grace and beauty.

“Life can be beautiful when you’re clear about who you are,” was Blige’s canned quote. “I am so excited to introduce this to my fans and to continue to give back to women thru FFAWN.”

HSN’s two cents:

“The highly successful launch of My Life last year forged new ground within the beauty industry, and My Life Blossom provides us with another opportunity to engage and delight Mary’s fans,” said Betsy Olum, HSN’s general manager of beauty and merchandising strategy. “Mary is an engaging storyteller who inspires confidence in women — and we are excited to have her share this new fragrance exclusively with HSN customers.”

Blige teamed up again with her friend and business partner Lisa Price of Carol’s Daughter to create My Life Blossom. The scent leads with bright florals of gardenia petals, mandarin, white greesia and orange flower. A heart of tuberose, blooming jasmine and marigold emerges, leaving a lingering base of sexy sandalwood, cashmere wood-warming vanilla.

My Life Blossom will be available exclusively on HSN and hsn.com.

As part of HSN Cares’ charitable campaign, for every My Life Blossom Eau de Parfum purchase, one dollar will be donated to the charity FFAWN, The Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now.

FFAWN was formed by Blige and Steve Stoute, to help women reach their individual potential through the support of scholarships, grants and programs.
