June 1, 2013

Kudos to ShopNBC for being the first home shopping network to broadcast live from the JCK Jewelry Show in Las Vegas.

We came in from a busy day of running around Friday to see Paul Deasy doing his thang on the show, with other vendors following up.

It’s great to see ShopNBC, or should we say ShopHQ, out of its Minnesota studios and doing a remote.

HSN Inks Deal To Telecast Live Concerts From the Venetian In Las Vegas, Baby

HSN and the Venetian Las Vegas have signed a multi-series concert deal to present “HSN Live From Las Vegas” with a kick-off concert featuring Grammy Award winner Bolton.

As we reported this week, Bolton will debut his newest CD “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough – A Tribute to Hitsville U.S.A.” during a live performance on HSN with special appearances from such Motown greats as legend Smokey Robinson, Valerie Simpson (Ashford & Simpson), Martha Reeves and many others.

The marketing partnership with The Venetian Las Vegas includes HSN Live concerts scheduled quarterly with various artists from The Venetian Theater and exclusive room packages at The Venetian and The Palazzo for HSN customers via TV, and HSN Mobile.

The HSN Live concert series has featured successful launches from some of the music industry’s biggest artists including Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart, Tony Bennett and most recently, Josh Groban, who introduced his new CD “All That Echoes” on HSN earlier this month.

“HSN has stepped up and provided exactly what artists and labels are looking for,” Bolton said in a canned statement. “HSN Live is a great platform with a built-in music-loving audience. HSN has delivered for great artists before me like Lionel Richie, Tony Bennett, Rod Stewart, and more and I can’t wait to put on a fantastic show at The Venetian with a tremendous group of amazingly talented artists and friends.”

And HSN corporate stuck its two cents in.

“HSN Live continues to provide its customers with unparalleled live music experiences from some of the music industry’s biggest stars and we are excited to welcome Michael Bolton to the HSN Live stage,” said Andy Sheldon, HSN’s executive vice president of television, live events and creative.

“We have seen tremendous success with our HSN Live concert series and are ready to take this innovative new music platform to new heights with our partnership with The Venetian and The Palazzo Las Vegas. Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world and there is no better place for live music than at these two amazing resort hotels.”

During Bolton’s concert, some of the additional Motown stars confirmed to perform or appear during the broadcast are Lamont Dozier, Brian and Edward Holland, along with acclaimed R&B artist Melanie Fiona, Orianthi and many surprise guests. The Motown Museum will be a benefactor of the event.

“HSN’s customers will visit The Venetian and The Palazzo during a noteworthy year for us — a year of exciting new entertainment options, and new shows in every one of our four theater venues. Special events such as this prove that The Venetian and The Palazzo continue to be the center of attention on the Las Vegas Strip.”

HSN Celebrity Chef Todd English Still Has Taste For Asian Woman, According To New York Post

February 27, 2010

The New York Post must save a spot in its Page Six gossip column each Saturday for an item on HSN celebrity chef Todd English.

Ever since English left his bride-to-be, Erica Wang, at the altar last October, the Post has been writing about him. Most of those tidbits have been about English kicking up his heels at some joint having a good ol’ time, not mourning his nasty break-up with Wang.

Today Page Six wrote about a possibly touchy subject: English’s “taste for Asian beauties.” His jilted bride Wang is of Asian descent, and today’s item says English was spotted in Las Vegas at American Fish “chatting up” an Asian woman at the bar there.

Page Six added that on Wednesday, Todd was seen with “another Asian stunner” while flying from Sin City to the other sin city, South Beach.

We’ve read stories by Asian woman talking about the sexual stereotypes Caucasian men have about them, and how they feel about those myths.

We’re half Puerto Rican, so we’re aware of the Latin spitfire, Madonna-whore, notions that men have about Hispanic women. We once went to a party for a Spanish-language cable network, and we ran into men who were essentially there just to meet the Latina hot tamale of their dreams.

It gave us the creeps. You couldn’t tell if the guy was interested in you, or the Latin stereotype he had in his head.

New York Post Fatmouth Phil Mushnick: Put A Sock On It, And Don’t Pick On Barry Manilow AND QVC

January 31, 2010

New York Post sports columnist Phil Mushnick always has an opinion on everything, even stuff he doesn’t know too much about.

In his TV Sunday column, “Prime Time,” Mushnick today takes a cheap shot at Barry Manilow, who last week did a live concert from Las Vegas for QVC to
promote his new CD.

In the final lines of a column that’s mainly a rant against Mel Gibson’s terrible anti-Semitism, out of nowhere Mushnick writes, “Things that look kinda pathetic: Barry Manilow on the QVC home shopping channel, last week, hawking his new album.”

What’s the big deal? Manilow is doing what every artist does: using every outlet at his disposal, including a cable network that reaches more than 90 million homes, to promote his CD.

Get over yourself, Phil.

Barry Manilow, Suzanne Somers’ Buddy, To Perform Live For QVC From Las Vegas Next Week

January 15, 2010

Suzanne Somers’ good friend, singer Barry Manilow, will be doing a live concert for QVC from the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas to unveil his new almum “The Greatest Love Songs of All Time.” The appearance will be Jan. 19 at 9 p.m.

During the special QVC Presents QSessions Live broadcast, the Grammy-, Tony-, and Emmy Award-winning Manilow will perform a selection of songs from the new album, while also giving viewers an inside look at the inspiration behind the collection.

QVC will be selling a specially packaged five-track bonus disc of songs that Manilow put together especially for QVC viewers, a week before street date.

“Barry Manilow continues to be a favorite among our viewers,” QVC director of merchandising Rich Yoegel said in a canned statement. “Performing his brand-new songs live from Las Vegas, this show promises to be one that no one will want to miss.”

The new album has Manilow once againt working with his longtime collaborator and Arista Records founder Clive Davis (now Chief Creative Officer, Sony Music Entertainment).

“The Greatest Love Songs of All Time” features his interpretations and arrangements of classic love songs, including” “Love is Here To Stay,” “The Look of Love,” and “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love.”

Manilow, whose 2006 QVC appearance marked the highest single-day sales by a musical artist in QVC history, also continues to hold the record as the highest single-hour music sales event in QVC’s 23-year history.

The new album will be available starting Jan. 19 through QVC.

ShopNBC Covers International CES Show With Online Reports From The Floor In Vegas

January 10, 2010

Dave King

In a clever move, ShopNBC is offering some nifty reporting from the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on its Web site, tying in interviews with big manufacturers like Sony and Panasonic to products the home shopping channel is selling.

ShopNBC host Dave King, an alum of QVC, conducts interviews of vendors on the floor of the huge show (we were laid off just after attending last year’s CES show). And he actually does a decent job, talking about the hot news at the CES this year, namely 3D-TV sets.

King does reports on the latest on TV sets, GPS systems, cameras and camcorders, and computer notebooks.

With consumer electronics the big growing catetory on home shopping channels, we think it was a smart move for ShopNBC to be at the CES.
