Caroline Kennedy, Not QVC, Is Shameless ‘Shill,’ Post Says Now

September 25, 2013

Last month we wrote a blog about a New York Post gossip item that blasted QVC for selling a costume jewelry replicas of pieces that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis owned. The nasty Page Six blurb called the baubles “tacky,” “sleazy” and “a ripoff.”

Is QVC’s Jackie O Jewelry Line ‘Tacky,’ ‘Sleazy’ And ‘A Ripoff’?

The Post also wrote that Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg had forced the line’s manufacturer, Camrose & Kross of Boonton, N.J., to run a disclaimer saying that the Kennedy family didn’t endorse the collection.

In this particular case, we actually defended QVC. And now it seems that the Post has changed its tune.

The Post changed its tune on QVC Jackie Kennedy jewelry

Last Sunday the paper wrote a brutal story about Caroline, our new ambassador to Japan, headlined “Selling Out Camelot: Caroline Kennedy shamelessly shills her family as she trots off to another non-job.”

http://nypost.com/2013/09/22/caroline-kennedy-sells-out-camelot/

“The most shameless huckster of Kennedy’s mythology and memorabilia is Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg,”
the story claimed.

The article charges that Caroline’s public image as the “classy, quiet keeper of the Kennedy legacy” is fake.

“She is a profit-minded serial holder of non-jobs. culminating in her appointment to one of our ultimate non-jobs, ambassador to Japan,” the story said.

The article described in excruciating detail how Caroline and her now-deceased brother, John Jr., auctioned virtually every item in their mom’s estate — event the doors from her White House dressing room. The sale generated a hefty $34.5 million.

Caroline also tried to put the kibosh on sales of Kennedy items put on the marker by other collectors.

And in what seemed like one of the most greedy acts, according to the Post Caroline sold the recorded interviews that historian Arthur Schlesinger conducted with Jackie after JFK’s murder. Those tapes has been sealed, only to be opened 50 years after Jackie’s death.

“The implication was these recordings were part of American history — that they belonged to all of us and would be released for free,” the Post wrote. “But Caroline took those tapes and sold them to her publisher, Hyperion, only 17 years after her mother’s death. The transcripts were packaged with CDs, and Caroline also sold the rights to ABC for a TV special.”

The Post story then talks about the item it ran about Caroline being displeased with the “sleazy” QVC Jackie jewelry line. But the spin is quite different than it was back in August, with Caroline cast s the villain.

The article said that in August, a friend of Caroline’s told the Post that she couldn’t believe that the home shopping network was selling the reproductions.

“Never mind that QVC was able to make copies because Caroline auctioned off Jackie’s jewelry, or that you could buy the stuff at the Kennedy Center’s gift shop, or one of Jackie’s favorite pieces was a fake, three-strand pearl necklace — clearly, peons should not have such easy access to her replicas of her mother’s fakes,” the Post wrote.

The Post accused Caroline of “crying foul whenever she can’t control the narrative or turn a profit herself.”

Wow!

QVC’s Robertson, Venable To Appear On Bethenny Frankel Show

September 21, 2013

As our colleague at our day job, Hugh Morley, would say — Ai, ai, ai (or however that’s spelled)!

QVC’s “lifestyle experts,” hosts Lisa Robertson and David Venable, will apparently be making regular appearances on Bethenny Frankel’s new TV show.

We don’t particularly consider Robertson and Venable lifestyle experts, but what the heck. We do know, and were shocked when we learned it, that Venable’s “In the Kitchen With David” is a huge, more than $100 million money maker for QVC. We’ve never bought one item from it, but what do we know?

We actually like Frankel, and we have a bottle of her Skinny Girl Margarita sitting in our refridgerator.

QVC Sprouts Sets Product Competition, ‘Today’ Show Appearance

September 18, 2013

QVC Tuesday unveiled QVC Sprouts, an ongoing crowd-sourced competition to search for the best up-and-coming products.

This week, six QVC Sprouts inventors and entrepreneurs will be featured on “The TODAY Show,” sharing their entrepreneurial journey and showcasing their products.

The program serves as an entry into multiplatform retail for entrepreneurs and inventors and provides an opportunity for them to grow their businesses through a scalable, responsible and nurturing process.

“QVC Sprouts not only helps us discover unique products and personalities, it provides entrepreneurs and inventors with a much needed platform and distribution method for their products,” Martin Bispels, QVC’s vice president of business development, said in a canned statement. “We’ve designed the program so that QVC fans can be a part of the journey, voting on the products that they want to see grow from seed to sprout and providing inventors with valuable, real-time feedback.”

Inventors will have a chance to tell the stories behind their product to a highly engaged audience and educate them directly on how their product works.

Every two weeks, QVC asks fans to vote online on which new product they would most like to see sold on the network.

The inventors who receive the most votes are offered the opportunity to sell their products on QVC.com and, ultimately, the potential to sell on air during a live QVC broadcast. Since the program’s pilot launch in March 2012, QVC Sprouts has received an average of 10,000 fan votes per week and has sold more than 50 new products online or on air.

Viewers are invited to vote online at TODAY.com/BrightIdea for their favorite product, and the winner will be announced on Sept. 20.

The featured inventors and entrepreneurs include: Stephannie Keller and Heidi Valenti with the Blinks Folding Reading Glasses Pendant Necklace; Anne Cork with the Coasterica; Jennifer Briggs with the DrainWig, Raymond Cotton with the fixnZIP; Stacy Struminger and Rachel Teyssier with the RAINRAP; and Eric Zimmermann with Trongs.

Immediately following the TODAY Show appearances, the featured products will be available to customers on QVC’s website.

Over the past 25 years, QVC has launched and fostered the growth of some of today’s most successful brands including Spanx by Sarah Blakely, Junior’s Cheesecakes, and Lobster Gram through nationwide product searches like “Quest For America’s Best – QVC’s 50/50 Tour” and the “Decade of Discoveries Tour.”

Different than the tours, QVC Sprouts is a year-round program, giving entrepreneurs and inventors an ongoing opportunity to submit their products.

Isaac Mizrahi’s Yom Kippur QVC Appearance Causes Stir

September 18, 2013

QVC fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi is in hot water — with the New York City Jewish community, according to the New York Daily News.

Its Confidential gossip column reported that Mizrahi’s appearance on QVC Saturday, Yom Kippur, the holiest Jewish holiday, upset local Jews. The News claims that some are calling for a boycott of his products.

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/confidential/mizrahi-latest-proves-tough-fit-holiday-article-1.1457977

It was especially surprising to see Mizrahi working on Yom Kippur because he is from an observant Jewish family, is a graduate of a Yeshiva and co-wrote a documentary called “Kingdom of David: The Saga of the Israelites.”

We were amused to see that a charismatic celebrity rabbi/author that we once interviewed for our day job, Shmuley Boteach, was quoted about Mizrahi’s actions.

“Modern people have to learn to put values before money, and if Sandy Koufax could give up the World Series for Yom Kippur, then Isaac Mizrahi could give up a dew hours of hawking some of his wares,” Boteach told the News.

HSN Vendor Carol Brodie’s ‘Fifty Shades or Grey’ Cuff Collection

September 14, 2013

Want a “Fifty Shades of Grey” necklace and bracelet? So do we. And HSN fine jewelry diva Carol Brodie has them.

Brodie, who does the Rarities line for HSN, sent out an email earlier this week. It said “Cuff me in diamonds” and “Tune in to see my 50 Shades of Rarities collection on HSN.”

Carol Brodie and Callie

Carol Brodie and Callie

First, there were 10K gold-and-diamond versions of a bracelet and necklace whose pave closures that resemble a tiny set of handcuffs. The price on those versions were so high, we let out a long sigh. The necklace alone was $2,700!

But Carol also did more affordable versions of the 17-inch necklace and 7 1/2-inch bracelet. They are both in sterling silver, but one is encrusted with white zircon and the other with black spinel. The necklace in sterling is $330, the bracelet about $300.

http://www.hsn.com/products/rarities-101ct-gemstone-17-necklace/7215526

Truth be told, we were not big fans of “Fifty Shades of Grey.” It has been sitting on our nightstand for months. We got through about a third of it, and were bored silly. It read more to us like a male fantasy.

If you are a female and what to read something hot, look at the novels of Anais Nin. Now those will knock your socks off!

As for the hubbub about the casting of the movie, our sister and we thought that Christian Bale would be great, but he is old for the role.

We have long been fans of Charlie Hunnam of “Sons of Anarchy,” and he may have the right stuff to play Christian Grey. Don’t sell him short.

HSN Rock God Jay King’s Cuff Is In Our Armoire

September 13, 2013

We’re happy to report that the check was cashed.

As we blogged several days ago, we mailed HSN rock god Jay King and his company a $90 check to pay for a stunning Carico Lake turquoise cuff that they made for us and sent us weeks ago.

Our Check Is In The Mail To HSN Rock God Jay King

The sterling cuff was to replace the Mine Finds by Jay King HSN TS that we had purchased, but returned because we felt it wasn’t up to snuff. We sent a $90 check to Jay’s crew because that was the cost the the Today’s Special.

CUFF

In a nutshell, we felt that accepting the turquoise cuff — however well-meaning the thought behind it — would give the appearance of a conflict of interest. We didn’t consider it a so-called bribe, again, it was that “appearance” of a conflict that had us worried.

Our journalism cronies suggested we send the $90 to avoid that appearance.

Well, the check was cashed yesterday. So we will be keeping the pistachio green cuff, and will wear it in good health.

Thank you Jay and Stacie Chavez.
