HSN Goes To London, Queen Latifah And Tony Bennett In The House

August 9, 2011

We finally found time to listen to HSN’s second-quarter earnings call from last week, and CEO Mindy Grossman offered a few tasty tidbits.

First of all, HSN will have its second destination event, this time going across the pond, as they say. The No. 2 home shopping network will be traveling to London to televise its shows, with vendors such as Twiggy, who does a clothing and accessory line, as part of the picture.

We believe the first destination event was last year’s birthday celebration in Vegas.

HSN will also continue its live concert series, this time with singing legend Tony Bennett. HSN will celebrate Bennett’s 85th birthday with a live performance by the songmeister, and the sale of his new CD.

And one of our favorites, Queen Latifah, will be debuting her new apparel line, for larger gals, this month.

Grossman also noted that the No. 2 home shopping channel had kicked off the third quarter with a bang, with Jennifer Lopez on the air to hawk her new perfume. This was immediately before Lopez announced her shocking split with Marc Anthony.

Diva Mariah Carey’s apparel line also premiered, and Grossman didn’t mention how Carey’s appearance was considered so wacky that it went viral.

Wall Street analysts asked Grossman about its jewelry business, since jewelry is a category whose sales have taken a huge hit during the recession.

“We feel good about our jewelry business,” Grossman said, adding that the product mix had been adjusted.

HSN’s has expanded its array of bronze-based metals, as we just saw this weekend with Studio Barse, because of the high cost of precious metals such as sterling and gold.

“We don’t have a very heavily entrenched gold business,” Grossman said. “If you look at our jewelry portfolio, it is incredibly diverse.”

HSN’s fashion jewelry business has increased, and Carol Brodie’s Rarities line of fine jewelry has performed well, according to Grossman.

“We’re feeling positive on the jewelry side,” she said.

HSN Promotes Holiday Plans With A Mariah Carey Promo

November 18, 2010

A day after QVC said it was bringing back the “new” Black Friday, HSN put out a press release about its star-studded Thanksgifting Weekend festivities. The biggest attraction will be pregnant pop diva Mariah Carey.

To promote this shindig, HSN has come up with a holiday TV campaign featuring Mariah Carey, Iman and Twiggy as guides on a virtual shopping journey that delivers “the greatest names in gifts.”

It’s kind of cute.

This promo is set to Carey’s single “Oh Santa” from her new album Merry Christmas II You, and showcases an array of products.

“This was one of the most creative campaigns HSN has ever produced and was designed to give our customers a window into the best of the holidays and gifts,” Andrew Sheldon, HSN’s EVP of Television & Executive Creative Director, said in a canned statement Thursday.

“It was exciting to shoot on the back lot of Universal Studios to capture the winter scenes and shopping windows — and to work closely with Mariah Carey and her team. Setting the promotion to Mariah’s new holiday release was a great opportunity to tie her music with her new lifestyle brand launch on Cyber Monday.”

HSN’s holiday campaign is airing on all of its shopping platforms and will also be in rotation on cable operators covering 95 million homes as part of HSN’s cross-channel marketing efforts.

Here is HSN’s line-up over the holidays:

• Nov. 19 – Twiggy presents her LONDON fashion line, while TV actress and fashion model Molly Sims offers the latest in fashion jewelry.
• Nov. 29 (Cyber Monday) – Carey launches her exclusive collection of jewelry and footwear, as well as her limited-edition fragrance and a “Merry Christmas II You” CD/DVD bundle. Also, TV actress Kathy Najimy debuts her new shapewear concept “Ch’arms.”
• Dec. 2 – Iman showcases newest fashion, jewelry and accessory designs.
• Dec. 3-5 – Chef Wolfgang Puck provides cooking tips for the holidays.
• Dec. 3 – Entertainment expert Colin Cowie presents the best in holiday entertaining.
• Dec. 4-5 – Decorating expert Nate Berkus offers distinctive styles for your home.
• Dec. 7 – Serena Williams serves up more of her jewelry, accessories and more.
• Dec. 8-9 – Culinary celebrity Padma Lakshmi showcases her collection of natural spices, teas and teapots.
• Dec. 10 – Mary J. Blige returns with her exclusive fragrance with HSN, My Life.
• Dec. 12 – Chef Todd English with his cookware.

As part of its efforts to make shopping as convenient as possible over the holidays, HSN is leveraging all of its platforms to enable customers to shop where, how and when they want – on TV from the comfort of their home, on hsn.com, or “on the go” on their iPad, iPhone or android handheld device.

Exciting surprises are also available online. Customers can play HSN’s “Great Gift Giveaway” and have the opportunity to win $100,000 in gift prizes, including HSN gift cards, and eight electronic packages, each valued at $2,000. The game is also available on HSN’s Facebook page and mobile app on the iPhone – and is featured on-air ever Friday at 4 p.m. during the Gift Friday hours.

HSN’s Good Deed: Designer Ornaments For St. Jude

October 22, 2010

Jay King's ornament

We think HSN’s Designer Ornament event is a pretty neat idea, and all for a good cause.

The No. 2 home shopping network asked a bunch of its vendors — 73 total — to each design a Christmas tree decoration for its HSN 2010 Designer Ornament Collection. The ornaments, which HSN has been selling on-air for the past two days, range in price from $20 to $40.

So Susan Lucci, Diane Gilman, Emeril Lagasse, Jay King, Mary J. Blige, Martha Sewart, Jennifer Stallone, Twiggy and Gwen Stefani were among the HSN vendors who designed ornaments for the collection.

Twiggy's version

The sale of the ornaments is supporting the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a pediatric research and treatment center devoted solely to finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic illnesses.

Gwen Stefani's ornament

In fact, 100 percent of the profits, no less than 30 percent of the purchase price of each ornament, will be donated to St. Jude.

We particularly liked Twiggy’s Union Jack version, King’s white and turquoise ornament, Stallone’s cute Santa and Emeril’s purple turnip.

Twiggy Is Just ‘Brilliant’ On HSN, And We Hope Her Jeans Are, Too

April 3, 2010

Saturday is Twiggy day on HSN.

The 1960s modeling icon — of short hair and painted lower eyelashes — debuted her Twiggy London line at midnight with her Today’s Special, a Union Jack Tote in a variety colors.

“I carry my life in my bag,” she said during her Saturday morning show. Now there’s something we girls can relate to.

Twiggy, now sporting long hair and more girth that during her modeling salad days, is quite charming. We like how she keeps throwing in British slang and word uses like calling items “brilliant” and talking about putting “bits” in her purse.

Twiggy, who expanded her career to include acting (with two Golden Globes and a Tony nomination) and even being a judge on “America’s Next Top Model,” is rocking a long gypsy skirt that we loved. But we were afraid it would be too long for 5-foot-2 shrimps like us.

Instead, we decided to give Twiggy’s jeans a try, in the grey color that we love so much but is so hard to find in retail.

We’re praying that their waistband don’t fall just two inches above our private parts, like 90 percent of the other jeans we’ve been trying on. How can you not feel like your pants are falling off?

Twiggy will be on all Saturday.

Mod Model Twiggy, Still Looking Good, Mounts British Invasion At HSN

March 25, 2010

We missed Twiggy on Tuesday.

The modeling icon of the 1960s was in Manhattan, at the Terrace Loft at the Bryant Park Hotel, to preview her new “Twiggy London” collection for HSN.

But we were tied to our computer, on deadline for a story, and didn’t have the time to trek into the city. We really wanted to be there.

We’ve already received a flyer from HSN about Twiggy’s line of clothes and accessories, which debuts April 3. It shows Twiggy, most recently a judge on “America’s Next Top Model,” wearing a long tiered shirt that’s right up our alley.

There are also several photos of the Union Jack handbag that will HSN’s Today Special April 3.

As we are one-quarter English (grandpa was Percy Moss, from Bolton, England), we welcome this British invasion.

Twiggy Set To Bring London Style To HSN April 3

March 9, 2010

Former bone-thin model Twiggy is doing a line of clothing and accessories for HSN that will debut April 3, the home shopping network announced on its Facebook page Tuesday.

With “Twiggy London,” the “original supermodel is bringing a lifestyle brand of eclectic and iconic apparel and accessories from across the pond,” HSN said.

Twiggy “burst upon the fashion scene” in 1966, with her trademark look of short hair, spikey eyelashes and “waif-like figure,” according to HSN.

Her HSN merchandise will have “loads of color and embellishment.”

Can’t wait to see it.
