Copycats Heidi Klum on QVC, Iris Apfel on HSN

The New York Post did a story Monday on celebrities hawking products by ripping – sorry we mean knocking — off real designers, and both QVC and HSN were cited in the story.

The article, “Attack of the Clones,” talked about one example that we were aware of where a celeb got called out for a product they were selling on QVC. That was the case of model-TV star Heidi Klum, who was in 2007 was sued by high-end jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels for a line she brought to the No. 1 home shopping channel.

Klum’s baubles had a clover-shaped design, which Van Cleef claimed unlawfully imitated its Alhambra collection. QVC pulled the line.

The Post said that the lawsuit was settled and that Klum later claimed that her business partner, Mouawad USA, was not “knowledgeable.”

According to the Post HSN and its owl-eye-glassed vendor Iris Apfel, a Seventh Avenue darling, also got in hot water. In 2011 the married couple that was the force behind Hanna Bernhard alleged that Apfel had copied one of its pins, a large jeweled toucan, for HSN.

The married duo shamed Apfel on their website, charging that Apfel owned their original toucan pin and had imitated it, the Post reported.

HSN later issued a statement saying that Apfel had mistakenly believed that the brooch in her collection was a vintage piece. The objectionable version of the toucan was dropped from Apfel’s HSN line, replaced by a “modified” version, according to the Post.

To our delight, Apfel has been doing a jewelry collection for HSN for some time.

Now she’s added apparel to that mix, inspired by the Tim Burton film “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.”

People magazine just did a story on the HSN line and interviewed the silver-haired grand dame. Enjoy.

We read the transcript of HSN’s second-quarter call with Wall Street analysts, and CEO Mindy Grossman had some juicy tidbits.

Iris Apfel, the 93-year-old fashion icon who does a jewelry and accessory line for HSN, is the subject of documentary that debuts on Wednesday, “Iris.” There was a screening of the film in New York City last week.

HSN is planning a big hoopla for the holidays, including a sweet sweepstakes, curated options and a “More the Merrier Holiday Gift Store” on HSN.com, the home shopping network said Tuesday.

First, there’s a “More the Merrier Sweepstakes presented by Toyota.” The nine-week event offers customers the chance to win prizes through the HSN Arcade gaming portal on HSN.com or by using their tablet or smartphone via HSN Mobile.

Here’s what’s on the list as top prizes:

* 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid – One winner will bring home the redesigned 2014 Camry Hybrid.

* NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Getaway — A trip for two to the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Toyota Owners 400 race at the Richmond International Speedway. The package includes hotel and airfare, VIP tickets to the race, pre-race pit and garage access and the chance to meet a Sprint Cup Toyota driver.

Designer Christian Siriano Rings In HSN Spring Fashion Event

“Project Runway” winner Christian Siriano debuted his new line for HSN Friday, part of the home shopping network’s effort to brand itself as “the destination for everything Spring Fashion,” from now until Match 23.

“Our Spring Fashion series makes it so easy for customers to update their wardrobe with the latest styles for the season,” HSN Chief Merchandising Officer Anne Martin-Vachon said in a canned statement, “By identifying and integrating these key Spring themes and giving our customers access to authorities like Robert Verdi, Christian Siriano and June Ambrose, we are enabling our customers to evolve their personal style and create the looks they will love.”

On the heels of his 10th show at New York Fashion Week, Siriano debuted his HSN exclusive collection today.
