QVC Reviewing Airing Of Racial Slur On Laptop

Well, this was one home shopping network demo of a laptop that really went awry. And thanks for the tip on this, kind reader.

According to, a viewer was recently shocked to see the “N” word on the screen of a cheapie laptop that QVC was demonstrating. At the time, the laptop screen was showcasing a website.

When contacted QVC, SVP of Brand and Communications Doug Rose issued an apology, said the incident was under investigation and added that the network was evaluating its live-streaming procedures.

QVC Returns To The Hamptons For Ovarian Cancer

QVC and the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF) are uniting once again for “QVC Presents Super Saturday LIVE,” an annual designer charity sale scheduled to be broadcast live from the Hamptons on this Saturday.

Ex-QVC host Lisa Robertson used to be all over this event, we wonder who QVC will have at this shindig now.

During the two-hour broadcast, fashions, beauty, jewelry and more will be offered for half the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, with 80 percent of the purchase price of donated merchandise benefiting the OCRF. Proceeds will also benefit Woman to Woman, OCRF’s nationwide patient program designed to support women undergoing treatment for gynecologic cancers.

“Ovarian cancer is often difficult to detect due to its subtle symptoms,” said Doug Rose, QVC’s senior vice president of brand and communications. “‘QVC Presents Super Saturday LIVE’ represents QVC’s commitment to raising both the awareness necessary for early detection and the funds needed to help conquer this deadly disease.”

Now in its ninth year, “QVC Presents Super Saturday LIVE” has generated more than $8.9 million to benefit the fund.

The live broadcast from OCRF’s Super Saturday NY will feature an assortment of brands such as Alex and Ani Charity by Design, Dooney & Bourke, Henri Bendel, Judith Ripka, Philosophy and many more.

“OCRF is proud to join forces with QVC once again to garner support and raise awareness of ovarian cancer,” said Audra Moran, the fund’s president and CEO. “Each year, the proceeds generated from QVC’s Super Saturday broadcast not only benefit women currently undergoing treatment for this horrible illness, but also bring us one step closer to eradicating the disease once and for all.”

QVC will launch #KeepinItTeal, a social media campaign featuring videos of celebrities and the faces behind some of QVC’s favorite brands, designed to help raise awareness of ovarian cancer. Viewers will be encouraged to share the videos on social media platforms and explain why and for whom they are #KeepinItTeal.

QVC, Disney’s ‘Tomorrowland’ Team On New Product Hunt

Guess who is partnering with a Hollywood movie studio for the release of a blockbuster. And no, it’s not HSN.

QVC announced Tuesday that it has kicked off the official voting period for “The Search for a Better Tomorrow,” a nationwide product search to discover the next big thing. The promotion is tied to the May 22 release of Disney’s “Tomorrowland,” which stars newly married George Clooney.

QVC is asking customers to vote for their favorite new products online now through May 15.

“For almost 30 years, discovery, entrepreneurship and storytelling have been at the heart of QVC,” Doug Rose, the network’s senior vice president of marketing and programming, said in a canned statement.

“We are committed to uncovering the inventors and products that make our customers’ lives easier, and input from our customers has always been a part of this,” he said. “Just as Disney’s ‘Tomorrowland’ celebrates the next generation of innovators, ‘The Search for a Better Tomorrow’ honors products, personalities and perspectives that embody imagination and originality.”

The product search is being conducted by the QVC Sprouts program, the home shopping network’s s ongoing crowd-sourced competition in search of up-and-coming products from inventors and entrepreneurs.

In March, QVC collaborated with the United Inventors Association (UIA) to invite inventors to submit their product ideas for the next big thing. On May 5 thirty inventors were invited to pitch their products to a QVC selection panel at the Las Vegas Hardware Show.

Of these 30 inventors, six were selected to have their products featured on “The Search for a Better Tomorrow” webpage, where customers can vote for their favorites.

The six products include:

Floor Register Glove Dryer – a non-electric dryer that uses your home’s existing heating system to dry your wet items from the inside out.

Micro Easy Grab – a simple solution to handling hot items in the microwave.

eTape 16 – a digital tape measure with two long-term memory inputs and a digital display.

The Seally Cap – a versatile kitchen utensil that allows you to reseal items like canned goods, glasses, canned beverages, fruits, veggies and more.

Tank Case Propane Storage Case and Cooler – helps prevent damage and hassle when transporting 20-lb propane tanks, and is also capable of being used as a cooler or outdoor stool.

UpCart – an innovative all-terrain, stair-climbing hand cart.

The inventors of the top three products, as determined by public vote, will appear live on QVC during “The Search for a Better Tomorrow” May 22 at 8 p.m. to coincide with the film release date of “Tomorrowland.”

The inventor receiving the highest number of votes will have the chance to sell his or her product live on air during “The Search for a Better Tomorrow” special. The show will also include a behind-the-scenes look at the product search, clips of Disney’s “Tomorrowland” and QVC’s most successful products and personalities that exemplify creativity and innovation.

Walt Disney was granted U.S. patent 2,201,689 for his “art of animation” multi-plane camera on May 1, 1940. This camera was then used to make many stories come to life on the big screen – and it’s still being replicated by studios around the world today.

Walt Disney’s visions were shared by Becky Cline, Director of Archives for the Walt Disney Co. at the UIA convention (National Hardware Show) May 5.

“Imagine a pig, a pair of frogs and their posse walk into QVC,” it says. “Sound like a far-fetched story filled with contagious laughter? Well, it will be reality on March 16 when the Muppets burst through QVC’s doors to celebrate Disney’s ‘Muppets Most Wanted, in theaters March 21. That’s right. The Muppets are coming to QVC!’

Dudes, we already wrote all about that, weeks ago! But here is the latest spin on QVC’s Muppet event Sunday.

“We might be crazy to let the Muppets assume control of QVC on March 16, but it’s too late to back out now,” Doug Rose, QVC senior vice president of marketing and programming, said in a canned statement. “We’re just crossing our fingers that they know what they’re doing and that nobody gets hurt.”

The fun-filled day will include numerous opportunities for the Muppets to mingle and cavort with many of QVC’s program hosts and celebrity guests. Among them, Swedish Chef will put his cooking skills to the test during a special edition of ‘In the Kitchen with David.’

We missed it, but Miss Piggy appeared on QVC this week to announce her latest venture in the fashion world – her Haute Tote, which she designed especially for the home shopping network’s event “Red Carpet Style – Live from L.A.”

Miss Piggy, star of Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted,” which will debut in theaters March 21, is also set waddle down the red carpet during the broadcast Feb. 28 at 9 p.m., when her tote will be showcased.


QVC is surely take a page out of HSN’s book by doing a marketing deal for a theatrical. The No. 2 home shopping channel has had many such partnerships, including one for “Eat, Pray, Love.”

Some perky QVC PR person came up with this quote for Miss Piggy.

“Naturally, moi has been chosen as this year’s mega-star attraction at QVC’s red carpet event! And as if having me there wasn’t enough, moi has also been chosen to design the 2014 ‘Red Carpet Style’ special-edition tote bag for this gala event,” Miss Piggy said. “Rest assured, both moi and the Haute Tote will be tote-ally fabulous!”

During the tour to promote their upcoming movie, the Muppets will join Miss Piggy on March 16 on QVC with on-air guest appearances scheduled throughout the day. From now through their arrival, the home shopping network is featuring the QVC Sweepstakes Celebrating Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted.*

Entrants have the chance to win prizes ranging from QVC gift cards and Muppet merchandise to a trip to the Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” premiere.

Jimmy Fallon And Rapper 50 Cent To Appear On QVC Tuesday: One Hawking His CD, The Other Headphones

Holy crow! QVC has really arrived now.

Next Tuesday, our sister Karen’s birthday, Jimmy Fallon, host of NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” and hip-hop king Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson will appear live on QVC.

Both Fallon and 50 are scheduled to be on “Anything Goes with Rick & Shawn,” at 10 p.m. “to share their product offerings and entertain fans,” QVC said in a press release.

“It’s not uncommon to see celebrities on air at QVC, but it is rare when two guests with such star power are featured on the same broadcast,” said Doug Rose, QVC’s senior vice president of programming and marketing. “‘Anything Goes’ is totally unscripted, so our viewers expect the unexpected.On June 12, we’re not sure what to expect either.”

Here’s the dope from the release on what Fallon will be hawking.

On the same day that his much-anticipated new CD ‘Blow Your Pants Off’ drops, Fallon is scheduled to mark his QVC debut. He will not only perform songs from his new album, but also take viewers behind the scenes of the creation of his best-selling sophomore book, “Thank You Notes 2.”

During Fallon’s appearance, fans will have the opportunity to order the new CD and the book, which have been specially packaged for QVC.

QVC Monday promoted Doug Rose to senior vice president of multichannel programming and marketing.

In this position, he continues to oversee teams responsible for strategic content, multichannel programming, public relations, marketing and brand development. Rose most recently served as vice president of programming and marketing

“With 28 years of marketing and advertising experience, Doug brings extensive knowledge of QVC’s business, programming and branding strategies to his new role,” said Claire Watts, QVC’s president of U.S. Commerce, to whom Rose reports. “His strategic vision will play an instrumental role as we continue to leverage our multimedia assets and evolve our programming.”

Since joining QVC in April 1994, Rose has held various key marketing roles. He began his career at QVC as director of consumer marketing, in which he managed the company’s consumer advertising, direct marketing and sponsorship programs.

He was later promoted to vice president of merchandising brand development, in which he oversaw QVC’s Vendor Relations department and was responsible for introducing new brands to QVC and for creating strategic alliances between QVC and other retail and media entities. .

Prior to joining QVC, Rose enjoyed a successful 12-year advertising career in San Francisco and Philadelphia with Ketchum Advertising, Young & Rubicam and Hal Riney & Partners. His advertising experience includes media planning and account management on packaged goods brands such as Clorox, Nestle and Campbell Soup, as well as Clio Award-winning campaigns for Bartles & Jaymes Wine Coolers and Gallo varietal wines.

Rose has been a guest lecturer at the Harvard and Stanford Business schools and has spoken on trends in customer service and electronic retailing at a variety of national marketing and retailing seminars. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Colgate University.

Jewelry Lovers Beware: Put Up With The Traffic And Hit The Malls, Not QVC, On Black Friday

We’re not feeling QVC’s much-hyped 28-hour “New” Black Friday event. If you’re a jewelry junkie like us, it’s not your day to tune in.

First of all, as QVC CEO Mike George has said, the network has shifted its product mix to more consumer electronics goods. And that’s reflected in the three — count ’em — three Today’s Special Values that QVC has Black Friday.

They are a Sharper Image projector, a kids Playhut Travel Lounger and the lowest-priced camcorder QVC has ever offered, a Sylvania pocket camcorder at $29.

We have to admit, the inexpensive camcorder is pretty neat. And it hands-down beats HSN’s Today’s Special, a Vado HD pocket camcorder at $129.

QVC host Dave James is staying on the air for the full 28 hours of the network’s event, and at about 8 a.m. he was looking a little tired. His kids did a paper-link chain for him with 28 links, one for each hour, and he’s pulling one off as he finishes another hour.

We’re amazed at the press attention QVC’s Black Friday event has garnered. On Friday the New York Daily News did a story on QVC, HSN and ShopNBC’s and their Black Friday strategies.
