QVC’s David Venable Goes Back To Aspen To Hawk His Cookbook

June 14, 2012

Here’s the job we want: Going to Aspen each year for the “prestigious” FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen.

Yes, QVC’s usually kitchen-bound David Venable will be back in Colorado. And he’s written a cookbook, which he will be hawking. Good Lord.

As part of the F&W Classic’s 30th anniversary celebration, QVC will air a special edition of “In the Kitchen with David” Sunday at noon.

The program will feature the season’s culinary “must-haves” as well as a star-studded lineup of celebrity guests including Lidia Bastianich and Susan Feniger, who will be offering her new cookbook “Street Food,” one month before it hits stores.

FOOD & WINE Editor in Chief Dana Cowin is also scheduled to stop by the broadcast to offer FOOD & WINE’s Best of the Best cookbook and bonus FOOD & WINE Cocktails 2012, more than three months before it hits stores.

During his three-hour show, Venable will also be cooking up some excitement of his own as he offers shoppers the opportunity to pre-order his new cookbook “In The Kitchen With David: QVC’s Resident Foodie Presents Comfort Foods That Take You Home,” more than four months before it drops.

“Participating in the FOOD & WINE Classic is a huge honor, which is why we are thrilled to have the opportunity to, once again, take viewers inside the prestigious event,” John Kelly, QVC’s vice president of merchandising, said in a canned statement. “Beyond the latest cooking gadgets and gear, this year’s broadcast will include dynamic segments featuring recipes and tips from David as well as a variety of star chefs attending the festival.”

Assisting Venable with celebrity and guest interviews will be recognized media personality Sissy Biggers. Biggers, who regularly hosts the FOOD & WINE Classic Cook Off, will assume an additional role this year and serve as a guest correspondent during the QVC broadcast.

QVC viewers will also be given VIP access to some of the premier celebrations marking the FOOD & WINE Classic’s 30th anniversary with special content from exclusive parties and tastings, including the multimedia retailer’s own “QVC Experience” tent, which will be at the entrance to the F&W Classic’s renowned Grand Tasting Pavilion.

Designed to bring the “In the Kitchen with David” broadcast to life, the “QVC Experience” will allow attendees to sample recipes from Venable’s upcoming cookbook and even participate in a blind wine tasting challenge where participants can vote on their favorite wines.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to preview premier cooking and dining products available through the retailer, including KitchenAid, Le Creuset, Capresso and more. The “QVC Experience” will also feature the QVC and In the Kitchen with David applications.

Even Lesbians Watch QVC, As Host David Venable Found Out On Black Friday Special

November 27, 2009

It’s official: Lesbians watch QVC.

On Thanksgiving Night– when QVC kicked off its 28-hour Black Friday event —  QVC host David Venable was doing a presentation on a Nexstar GPS system, at $130. He then fielded a call from a viewer who was purchasing it.

David Venable

“It’s Debby from New Jersey,” Venable said, and then starting chatting with her about the GPS item.

“Debby, who’s going to be enjoying this for the holidays?” Venable asked.

“Me and my wife,” Debby answered.

Ever the pro, Venable stopped for a second, nodded his head, and then continued, saying, “So you’re going to able to enjoy this whenever you all are on vacation, around town?”

It’s the first time we’ve ever heard a member of a gay couple call in to QVC and put their sexual orientation right out there –not that there’s anything wrong with that.

But see, it’s proof of what we’ve been telling you all along: QVC attracts a wide spectrum of America.

Food Network Star Paula Deen Gets A Touching, Teary Call From A Fellow Southerner — And Fan — On QVC

November 17, 2009

There were several priceless moments on Food Network star Paula Deen’s show Monday evening on QVC, including one that almost had us tearing up along with the charming celebrity cook.

Deen, known for her “Y-all” Southernisms, had a live audience at the QVC studio in West Chester, Pa. We’re not trying to be mean, but they were the heaviest group of people we have ever seen in one place. And we are not exaggerating. They must love to eat Deen’s butter-laden dishes.

Anyway, Deen sells food items and cookware on QVC. She was on with a fellow Southerner, host David Venable, when she started talking about the ham sausage she was selling. It’s her No. 1-selling food item on the home shopping channel. And Deen loves those sausage patties herself.

“I put it in my mouth and I suck on it, I suck until all the juices are gone, and then I chew it,” she told Venable, who was left a little speechless by her remark. We guess he has a dirty mind like us.

Deen and Venable, who looks like he’s been eating a lot of Deen’s food, later called the cook-restaurateur from Georgia one of our favorite Southern expressions: Sweet pea.

But putting all our reporter cynicism aside, there was a really touching moment at the end of the show. The only thing like it we have ever seen on home shopping was when host Rick Domeier wiped away tears during his recent anniversary show.

Lisa from Mississippi called in, and said, “I love you Paula, and David, too.” She was crying, apparently so excited and happy to be talking to Deen.

Moved by the woman, Deen almost started to cry, as well, telling Lisa she loved her, too. The caller told Deen she was buying her sausage patties as well as turkey breast for Thanksgiving.

Deen was obviously was still touched by the woman, who she said had “the sweetest voice,” and she turned to Venable.

“David, you don’t realize how you touch people,” Deen said. “You don’t realize how you touch ’em until you get a call like that from that little lady and it makes your heart just full.”

Good for you Paula.
