N.Y. Post Puff Piece On ShopHQ And Honcho Bozek

The New York Post’s business section finally did a story on ShopHQ’s name change to Evine Live (better late than never), and you will have to pardon our French here.

The article was what we in the journalism business would call a bl-w job. What does that mean? It was a fawning, unskeptical piece on the No. 3 home shopping network’s planned rebranding by new CEO Mark Bozek.

Here’s the headline; “Bozek’s No Clown: Brings Mojo to TV Shopping Channel.” The Post credits the former HSN honcho with bringing “brands with fans” to ShopHQ.

If you read the story, you get management-speak mumbo jumbo from Bozek about how Evine Live is going to be a competitor to Amazon.

Really? Well we’re going to earn $1 million (like Mr. Bozek) in the next year. Just because you say something doesn’t make it happen.

We appreciate Bozek making bold moves at ShopHQ, but rebranding a network, any network, is tricky business. We wish him luck.

I’m a little confused SHOPHQ is changing their name (again) to Evine Live? A competitor to Amazon? Is this going to be a shopping channel or a shop online website? I’m serious it’s very confusing.

  2. Abigail Says:

Compete with Amazon, for real? Its bad enough they have that silly name, and, now, that comment, Irvine Live can’t even compete with Jewelry TV with the stuff the peddle, let alone Amazon, but, I guess that fluff was for the shareholders more than anyone else, see how long said shareholders go for this if Irvine Live does not put Amazon out of business, too funny for real!

  3. Scott Says:

I read the article. Where does it say they intend to compete with Amazon. Nowhere. He was on Bloomberg and said They would not try to compete with Amazon or eBay. Bitter about something. The former shophq execs friends of yours?

    • homeshoppingista Says:

That’s funny, Scott. The former mgt at ShopHQ hated me, they did not consider me a friend.
As for The Post story, put your eyeglasses on. Here is what it says: “The results have emboldened Bozek, who contends proprietary brands presented entertainingly will propel Evine Live even after its digital build-out has it going mano a mano with Amazon.”

  4. Carrie W Says:

Amazon’s not going anywhere! And if it was it won’t be because of Evine – whatever the heck it’s called!!

  5. Lauryn Says:

I too am confused about the new Evine Live thing. When reading about it, it says it’s a digital, online shopping “experience”. So, is it not going to be a shopping channel next year? And what are all these great brands they are bringing? Honestly, they are WAY overdue with that. All they ever sell are Invicta watches, ugly bedding, and jewelry by the three amigos!

I love their North Shore Linens line- they are very nice sheets. Not the microfiber one’s though- stick with cotton.

  6. AprilD Says:

Actually they sell EMU, Anuschka, Brooks Brothers, Waterford, Calvin Klein, Patricia Nash, One World, Kathy van Zeeland, Borghese, Lancome, Gucci and Movado watches and many other great brands.

  7. Queen Celeste Says:

As a shopper with them since about 1991, I’m worried. This is my favorite shopping channel. I think I’ve written before that l love the hosts, the quirkiness (the other night Laura Duffek, Allison Waggoner were wrapped in the Today’s Value wraps while a vendor rapped about them), and many of the products (not watches). I love watching Carmella Richards and hearing her lovely voice on the automated ordering line. They sell a line,Sweet Romance, beautiful jewelry made in the U.S.A. My fear is that with the rebranding all that is special will be done away with.

And the the point Lauryn brought up: will it only be online? Say it ain’t so! For some of us who prefer TV, this is not good news. And the new name–what a curious choice.

I have also shopped with them since the early 90’s. I like the fact they do not spend half an hour or more on each product like the other two channels that bore me silly. I also like the fact that because they are way smaller, the quality of their products is much better. They do not have 60,000 or more of something mass produced in China so that 10% of customers get sent junk and have to pay for return shipping. They have much better shipping deals and their house brands for fashion, linens and cooking are pretty decent quality for what they charge. The Fashions they sell do not look like shapeless sacks. They are trying to have products that are made in the U.S.. The hosts are mostly informative and entertaining. They also ship orders much more quickly than the others. Plus the fact that they HAD way less overhead than the other two with their fancy studios, celebrities and gizillion models. I am really worried that I will lose all that. Especially with the huge amounts these two CLOWNS are paying themselves.

  8. homeshoppingista Says:

I’m sure it will remain a TV channel, but it appears that they are trying to boost their digital presence. A net like SHopHQ already has the infrastructure in place to fulfill orders placed online, it should be taking full advantage of that fact.

  9. AprilD Says:

Bozek just showed up on air at ShopHQ (still really like this name)
with his family to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Don’t know what to make of it. He didn’t have the usual smug smirk on his face.

  10. homeshoppingista Says:

I wish I had seen him.

  11. Keith Says:

Changing the name is ludicrous. Buy hey, most of you guys don’t know the real reason and it has nothing to do with the nonsense stated by Bozek. It is called greed. See Bozek started a company called Evine years ago. He owns the rights to the name. So as a perk for moving to MN, he and his cronies find him a way of getting him more moola. He sells the name to Value Vision, they make up a hokey story that they need the name to keep the contacts Bozek has established, LOL , like a name matters and he walks away with a cool million dollars for nothing. Who cares if it confuses the hell out of the customers, Bozek won’t be there long, he just wants to get as much money as quickly as possibly and get the hell out of MN. See Bozek is just a nicer form of the jerk Keith but deep down they are cut from the same cloth. As the rock band The Who said in the song “Don’t Get Fooled Again” it’s “The New Boss the Same as the Old Boss” Rock on Bozek, get paid and get out of the God Forsaken part of the country…
