ShopNBC Can’t Afford Charla Rines, But It’s Paying The New President $400,000 A Year

ShopNBC's $400,000 man

ShopNBC is paying its new president, QVC and Macy’s veteran Bob Ayd, a base salary of $400,000, according to a filing with federal regulators Wednesday.

After the market closed, ShopNBC stealthily filed an 8-K with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Ayd’s compensation package. The 61-year-old, named the network’s president Feb. 1, will receive an annual base salary of $400,000, according to the filing.

He also “will have a fiscal year 2010 incentive opportunity to earn up to 65 percent of his annual base salary.” If we can translate that into English, we think he can get up to 65 percent of his salary, or $260,000 on top of his annual wages, as a bonus if he hits his numbers. ShopNBC is also relocating Ayd.

As part of the deal, ShopNBC granted Ayd options to purchase 350,000 shares of common stock at an exercise price equal to the fair market value on the date of grant — or $3.99 on Feb. 1 — 280,000 of which vest over three years and 70,000 of which vest upon his relocation to Minnesota.

Canned host Charla Rines

This all may not sit well with fans of veteran ShopNBC host Charla Rines, who was let go by the network in January. Presumably, as a old-timer at ShopNBC, Rines was making a good salary, which may have helped pave the way for her demise. Or her age could have done her in. Either way, many ShopNBC viewers are not happy, according to the posts on our blog on her exit.

Ayd signed a non-compete agreement, and will receive an amount equal to his base salary, namely $400,000, if he is terminated without cause during his first year of employment.

Ayd served as executive vice president and chief merchandising officer at QVC domestic from 2006 to 2008. He also served as senior vice president of design Ddvelopment & global sourcing and brand development from 2005 to 2006, and as senior vice president of jewelry andfFashion from 2000 to 2004.

Ayd began his career at Macy’s in 1975 as a buyer of handbags, bodywear and footwear, launching a 20-year tenure that included promotion to numerous executive leadership positions, culminating with senior vice president in women’s sportswear. Ayd was an independent consultant from 2008 to 2009.

When Ayd was named ShopNBC president, CEO Keith Stewart voluntarily relinquished his title as president, while continuing as CEO and a director. Ayd reports to Stewart.

  1. Claudia Says:

I don’t believe that Charla was let go due to age since they have several other hosts in her age group still there.

She’s in her 40’s but she looks older because of her love of the sun.

I hope she shows up somewhere soon.

    I miss her!

  2. bus Says:

charla is well into her fab 50’s and she probably knew she was going to be let go a year ago. I say this because of the crazy schedule she was having. But hey I wish they could have sent her off properly so her fans could have said goodby

  3. Caroline Miller Says:

Does anyone know where Charla Rines in working now since they through her out with the trash. I will never, never shop with them again. I hope I have a lot of followers. Love you Charla. Wish you well, and hope to see you soon.

  4. Paula Marx Says:

ShopNBC has really gone downhill since they got rid of all of their quality lines. Charla was ShopNBC. Her personality was outstanding. I wish her well and hope that another channel is smart enough to snatch her up.

  5. Sophie Says:

What a loss for ShopNBC! Looks like the only old timers are Lynne Schacher and Kendy…Charla lended credibility to a lot of the products ShopNBC sold. I trusted her style and opinion on jewelry. What will the Isomers line be without Charla’s personal testimony? I truly hope another network is savy enough to snatch her up. SHAME ON YOU SHOPNBC for letting a gem like Charla go! If I controlled the axe, I’d have let Jim Skelton, Sarah, Libby or any of the newer hosts go.

  6. claudia Says:

I agree with ShopNBC quality going downhill and the hosts are such a yawn fest, except Bill Greene, but only because he’s so handsome.

Also, their 30 days return policy starts at time of order not time of receipt.

  7. Jackie Says:

One of the reasons I first purchased from ShopNBC was Charla and I am sad to see her go. I do hope though that the new import from QVC brings a better IT and customer service department. On Jan. 19 I ordered 2 faux fur coats. I checked the order the next day and saw that the correct delivery address had been replaced with an address that hadn’t been used since early 2006. (An address I had asked them to remove from my profile and they kept saying they had.)

I immediately called customer service to change it back to my correct delivery address and they said that although it had not been shipped yet the address could not be changed. They said I should wait until it shipped (which happened 3 days later) and call the shipping company. The shipping company tried to help me but because the two addresses were not in the same delivery center, only the shipper (ShopNBC) could make an address change.

When I called back to ShopNBC customer service, they said that for security reasons they could not change the address. I would need to wait for the package to be refused by the place where it was incorrectly delivered. I told them I thought it was a university that had taken over the office space and it would probably be lost. ShopNBC would not do anything. Sure enough the items was not returned to ShopNBC.

I called on the date they said to call to register my complaint of not receiving the merchandise. Customer service then informed me that I would need to fill out a claim report. I asked them to e-mail the forms to me and gave them my work e-mail. They said that it would still take 5-7 days for the forms to reach me.

I did not receive them and finally checked my other e-mail and sure enough that was the address that they sent them to. I read over the forms and they need to be notarized. So now I’m being penalized because their ordering system input an old nonexistent address and their customer service department would not change it even when I notified them in time to make the chang. They need major HELP with their shipping and customer service.

I will never shop at ShopNBC again. They do not have the expertise to play in the big leagues of electronic shopping. Anyone else with the same ordering and delivery problems?

  8. Paula Says:

Not only have some of the best hosts of SHOPNBC been let go but the better vendors have left the network….they are left with less than mall quality merchandise; very poor quality and not work the shipping and handling to purchase

  9. Jet Says:

I am sad to find out Charla is gone. I have been looking for her to come on and finally I checked the hosts on their website and she’s not there anymore. I think Charla is a fun host. She’s down to earth and not boring at all. She says the most ridiculous things sometimes and that is why she is the best host there. ShopNBC you really had done something wrong here. I hope QVC hires her. She’s great!

  10. D. gibbs Says:

I am really upset that Charla has been let go. she was the most exciting host shopnbc had. to the new guy there you are making a big mistake. i have noticed stock is going down. and viewership and sales will be lost.

    • Gail Says:

Charla was indeed the best show host. And with her went all the beautiful products that drew viewers everywhere. I depended on shopnbc for their superb quality. What a letdown.

  11. Cina Ellison Says:

Well today my family and I learned of Charla Rines is no longer with Shop NBC, We are VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED. I searched the web to find out that the new president of ShopNBC is starting off salary is $400.000 a year. They made the cut of the higher paid hostesses and gave them the Axe… what kind of BS is this.

If the New president was smart enough he would Get Charla ..and Wes & Pamela McCoy Back on the air…they cut off the great hostess that know how to sell and explain the brand to the potential consumer, to hire cheap labor and hostess that dont know the product they are selling..

My family and I will be going back to shop with HSN and QVC… Remember the best way of advertising is by the word of mouth… for ever 1 consumers who doesnt shop with Shopnbc… 10 to 15 more will follow….If Shop NBC has any common sense they will fix the issue and bring them back…

going back to HSN and QVC….

We Luv you Charla.. and Pam And Wes…
and may you be prosperous in all you rendeavors….
when some doors close others will open….

    The Ellison Family

  12. Mary Says:

It is too bad that when the new management came aboard Shop NBC they felt the need to “clean house”. This seems to happen in many corporations. By letting their seasoned veteran hosts go and bringing in a new flock proved to be their worse mistake. Not only did you offend all of us that watch the network, but we actually had respect for the people who were hosting. I am sure these new hosts will get by, but they lack an expertise and professionalism and charming character that each of the hosts that are now gone, projected on the show.
The shows are boring, the products are lacking the quality they once had. The best vendors are long gone. I bought so many beautiful pieces of jewelry that I would not have otherwise. But vendors like Sonia, Behzad, Offerings, the Ramseys and many more made it worth watching. We learned so much from them also. Now we have just a handful of vendors left that offer quality. Too few to even have an All Star Show (which was fun). Oh and forget about Suzanne Somers. None of her items are of any quality. Pleasssssse!
I also get the impression that the remaining hosts are feeling stress and fear in the way they demonstrate. They appear to be worried that if something goes wrong they will be next. This all comes across the screen.
I watch Karen Connelly and Marva Nation on Gems TV. Skip is on JTV and they are doing a great job. I did notice that Tim comes in once in awhile, Carmella and also Laura which is nice to see. Paul Deasey, really doesn’t do that much. Sorry Paul. His wife, Judy, came on with some products I couldn’t believe my eyes she would even consider selling.
Many of the vendors are on HSN. Palermo, Behzad, Marianna & Richard (Offerings), Prai and more.
Life goes on and hopefully we will soon see fabulous Charla and wonderful Mike on another network as well as Carey (who once was on HSN)
The door closes but another will open. They deserve the best and they have my best wishes.

  13. Joyce Hogg Says:

Yes, I have to agree and have stated on several occassions that ShopNBC has gone down hill. Who wants to see watches, Margie, and coins. I guess to keep the show going, you got to show something, but you must ralize by now that your ratings have dropped. You have let go your best vendors, Sonia, Rameys, Effy, Passport to Fine Jewerly and more. From that point on I switched to HSN,QVC, Direct Shopping. I can’t see ShopNBC staying on the air with the junk thats on the air. Charla, good luck to you. You kept it real and that I admired you so much for that. Let us know where we can tune in and watch you.

  14. Sharon Sauers Says:

The last few months have been very busy ones for me and I have not had much time to watch TV so just realized a couple of weeks ago that I hadn’t seen Carla. Same thing happened when I realized that Karen was gone. Well, I am just shocked! Carla was ALWAYS one of the best hosts that SHOPNBC had and the ones that have replaced her cannot even begin to compare to her ability to sell me a product. You could always tell when Carla has a passion for something and she had exceptional taste. The most amazing part is that they kept Lynn and Kim, on. I change the channel immediately when I see Lynn on. Also, I get so tired of seeing watches on that show and change the channel to HSN or QVC (have QVC on right now!). Anyway, so sorry to see Carla go and I hope that she knows that “things happen for a reason”. Best of luck to you!

  15. Annette Campbell Says:

I agree with you all that Charla and Wes & Pam were great show hosts and deserved every penny that they made. I had heard thru my own personal contacts that ShopNBC was going under monetarily and had to do something and fast or leave the air. BUT–paying some stuffed shirt $400,000 a year is insane. Our counties president is paid that amount for goodness sake!!! Now that GemsTV has also taken it’s leave from the tube, maybe Karen Connolly, The McCoys and Charla along with others will make a brand new appearance????? I sure hope so and wish them all the very best. I used to watch the McCoys most every nite for Wes McCoys relaxing voice to calm me down–I miss you all.

  16. Helen Says:

As a woman, I stopped shopping with Shop NBC some time ago when they started catering to men, i.e.: beds, watches and computers. I am thankful in a way for the lack of interesting items and poor quality because I am saving a lot of money. I really started getting hooked on Value Vision when Charla was a host and I really enjoyed her. Shop NBC was never as good as Value Vision and I have watched its demise for some time. At this point, with the letting go of its important vendors and show hosts, I don’t care if it falls off the planet, let alone off the air.

  17. Linda Says:

Just thought about looking up Charla Rines – have missed her and have not watched ShopNBC or shopped with them in so long. Do not like their line up or wish-washy hosts; really miss the jewelry lines of the past. How many stupid stained glass lamps and bedding can they put on the air for hours on end? At least Charla had the fantastic wit and personality to make it fun watching and shopping.

  18. Pamela Says:

What in the world has happened to ShopNBC? The only merchandise they sell now is easily obtainable at you local mall or flea market unless you live in the wilds of Alaska. Miss the hosts, miss the highend products, the whole concept is down the tubes.

  19. Mary Welch-Falzone Says:

I haven’t watched ShopNBC lately let alone order anymore. I agree that Charla Rhines was the best host. She was refreshing, upbeat and a joy to watch. I trusted her. Please inform as to where she might be working at another shopping channel.

  20. Michele Georgens Says:

Miss Charla, Pam and Wes and all the lovely jewelry shoes you had on. I too am tired of lamps and watches! BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Michele Georgens Says:

Miss Charla, Pam and Wes and all the lovely jewelry shows you had on. I too am tired of lamps and watches! BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. ANCILEE KAYE Says:

I cannot belive they let CHARLA Go..what in SAM HELL WERE they thinking? Absolutely nothing, obviously!! I am so mad they did this!!
I always fill out the questions from that pop-up from Biz just after you place your order online…and I said that I was not happy w/ the lack of fine vendors and fine affordable diamond jewelry, purses, and then they come up w/ a new diamond line that looks kinda cheap to me.
So, I notice Charla isn’t on for along time now and I finally google her name to see if she is okay. I never thought ShopNBC would do this to Charla Rhines. How can they be so COLD BLOODED @ SHOPNBC?? I hA

  23. ANCILEE KAYE Says:

I also told them io started shopping on other shopping channels. I am sure they read those. I stated “yes” to share the info w/ ShopNBC.
Next thing you know they have a new diamond line that is nothing compared to what they had before. I miss so many jewelry artists, fashions, awesome show hosts they had and what happened to
“THE FIND” w/ Lisa Roberts???? I miss that line. I bought a purse she and Annie designed and it is so awesome. I am glad that I got what I got when I got it. Anyhoo, I also miss Richard and Marianna’s, designs and awesome shows. Plus the older designer couple {John and ?} from Washington State that knew what they were doing as well.
I also loved Cedrics Furs and Shawls, hats, etc. I miss so many people from ShopNBC!! I don’t buy much of anything but Isomers and maybe a ring from gem insiders now and then. I have 2 so far… nice. But, that doesnt make up for how much I/we miss.
    NOW DOES IT???
I hope Shopnbc reads this page. I think I will send it to them…

    Ancilee

P.S. I’m sure they are feeling the $$$ pain from the bad decisions they made!!!!!

  24. DARLENE Says:

    DEAR SHOP NBC:

I HOPE THAT YOU PUBLISH THIS. I HAVE SPENT A FORTUNE AT SHOP NBC AND HAVE LOVED MOST OF ALL THE MERCHANDISE!! BUT WITH THAT SAID YOU ALSO GET TO KNOW THE HOSTS. WES AND PAM MCCOY ARE SOOOOOO CLASSY AND CHARLA RHINES IS A HOOT. WES AND PAM AND CHARLA MADE SHOP NBC. I WATCHED IT BECAUSE OF THEM AND THEIR PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT YOU LET THESE THREE PARTICULAR HOSTS GO. I HAVE ALWAYS, ALWAYS BEEN SO IMPRESSED WITH WES AND PAM AND CHARLA.

NOW, I STARTED OUT WITH QVC AND HSN AND PAUL KELLEY IS THE BEST. HE IS A VERY INTELLIGENT AND KIND MAN. WAKE UP PAUL PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHEN PEOPLE/HOSTS ARE THERE A LONG TIME AND THEY MAKE THE MONEY THEY MAKE FOR DOING A GREAT JOB THEY SHOULD BE HELD IN RESPECT AND NOT LET GO. THEY ALSO HAVE MADE SHOP NBC.

READING ALL THE COMMENTS ABOUT THE SHOP NBC GOING DOWN HILL-I HAVE TO AGREE. IT DOES SHOW THE FEAR IN THE OTHER HOSTS AND I DO NOT BLAME THEM. I LOVE SHOP NBC AND I REALLY, REALLY WANT WES AND PAM AND CHARLA BACK!!!!!!!!!!P L E A S E —- A S A P!!!!!!!!!!!! I MEAN IT BRING THEM BACK OR SHOP NBC WILL GO OFF THE AIR FAST.

    WITH THE KINDEST REGARDS

    DARLENE

  25. Jennifer Says:

Shopnbc blew it with getting rid of Karen Connolly and Charla Rhimes, they were good at their job and talked me into many things. No wonder they are in 2011 so in debt, they pay the guy from QVC way too much. I use to shop strictly shopnbc but have gone over to HSN for things, like purses and shoes of which Shopnbc has not mastered yet.

  26. Babette Says:

I used to keep SHOPNBC on continuously as “background noise” while doing housework, etc. Since they decided to get rid of Charla I rarely watch any more. I learned SOOOOOO much from her about jewelry for instance how it’s wiser to chose white over yellow gold when set with diamonds because the individuals making the jewelry will usually use whiter (higher quality diamonds) in the white gold settings. Now where on earth would I have learned that little “pearl of wisdom” without her? I bought some of the most fantastic pieces in years past, I am so very glad I did since I NEVER would be able to afford them now! I wish we could stage a protest and demand she be rehired! Plus her personality–all the goofiness and joking around was so refreshing to watch compared to the stiff robotic way some of the hosts (on ALL of the shopping channels) present things.

  27. E Mail Says:

CHARLA, is a host on World on Watches now.

  28. Rosita Gonzaga Krenn Says:

No Charla, no Wes and Pamela Mccoy ? what’s wrong with you shopnbc ? I sure hope you go to hell soon !!

  29. Maria madera Says:

Charla was the best host on shop nbc bar none. She was funny and outrageous but most of all i believed her when she presented something. Sometimes she did not care for products she presented and i always picked up on it. Charla shop nbc is nothing without you. Dump the watches and phony suzanne sommers

  30. Maria madera Says:

I placed a message earlier and i forgot to say i will never shop at shop nbc again! Inhope it goes off the air fast!!!!!!!!!

  31. Margaret Says:

Shop NBC is junk since char,Wes and Pam are no longer on, they had class

  32. Shedonna Says:

Pam and Wes were outdated (brought and outdated look and feel). As for Charla, she was (and still is on World of Watches, which really appears cut rate) blow-your-ears loud. Television shopping needn’t still be up in your face screaming and obnoxious in this stage of the game. Maybe they were let go because they were “old timers” who were stuck in a way of operating that is no longer appealing or productive for the time. Wes McCoy reminded me of Dialing for Dollars (or at least that era) for some reason, and his presentations were stiff and blah (uninteresting). Yes, they were good for and appealed to some of the older generation of viewers, perhaps, who still deserve some significant slice of the market, but I do not think they (Charla, Wes or Pam) made the channel or the quality of the merchandise. I think that is taking their departure a little bit too personally.

  33. gail Says:

    where is charla NOW!!!!

  34. patricia zoran Says:

Yes, I miss Karen,Carla and the McCoys. But, I still shop at this at Shopnbc and I also notice the quality isn’t too great. I also notice the bottom line is profit and not customer sarisfaction. I have maybe 25 of Pam’s coat and since she has gone I have not purchased another. I have lots of Isomers products but since Carla is gone I have not purchased anymore. I have thousnads of dollars of Karens line of jewerly and I will not purchase the junk you show now.

  35. b.surma Says:

I REALLY THINK THAT INVICTA’S PRESIDENT OWNS ABOUT
75% OR MORE OF SHOP NBC. THEY REALLY DON’T HAVE
    ANY NICE JEWELRY ANYMORE.
