QVC Host Patti Reilly Bids A Teary Farewell, With People Still Asking ‘What’s Up With That?’

March 12, 2011

We came in on the tail end of Patti Reilly’s final show on QVC, and she has wiped tears from her eyes several times as we were watching.

She is going to need a truck to take home all the bouquets of flowers she’s gotten during her swan song.

She is now on the air with makeup queen Laura Geller, who she described as her best friend. The show is about to end.

“I’ve been crying here all night,” Geller told Reilly.

Reilly, who looks pretty good in a cute grey vest and white ruffled shirt, has been taking calls from friends and even QVC vendor and shampoo pooh-pooher Chaz Dean, who told her, “You’re jumping ship! What’s up with that?”

That’s what a lot of people are wondering.

On Facebook a few days ago, Reilly seemed a little annoyed that fans keep asking why she is going.

She posted her answer Monday.

“Why am I leaving QVC?” she said. “I don’t want to look back 5 yrs from now w regret. I want to step thru a potential door of opportunity that I may have never known existed had I ‘played it safe.’ I’ve been praying for a new life & I believe this is part of the plan:) I am grateful for the years spent, but it’s simply time to move on.”

At the very end of Reilly’s last QVC show, hosts Lisa Robertson and Jacque Gonzales came out — and also got weepy –to say goodbye. Gonzales blubbered something about Reilly coming to her wedding that we didn’t quote catch.

“Thank you everybody, for watching me for 11 years,” Reilly said.

Ever-bubbly Mally Roncal, the red-carpet makeup artist, was also on Reilly’s final “Friday Night Beauty” show. In fact, Roncal created two products, a Highshine Liquid Lipstick Duo, just for Reilly.

“I had to take care of Miss Patti,” Roncal said. “You know Miss Patti Reilly, she is a sparkler, a firecracker.”

Geller, by the way, has now lost two of her good buddies at QVC. Host Lisa Mason, Geller neighbor in Manhattan, also exited this year. In fact, Mason and Geller are doing a meet-and-greet in Manhattan to promote Mason’s new book.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: People seem to love or hate Patti. QVC customers are bantering back and forth on our blogs about her, which mentioned the fact that she had lost a lot of weight vey quickly, making some suspect she had some kind of surgery.

QVC’s Patti Reilly Will Bid Farewell Friday

March 6, 2011

For those who have asked, QVC host Patti Reilly’s last day is apparently next Friday.

At least, that’s what her fellow QVC host Lisa Robertson said on Facebook yesterday.

“Just had lunch with Patti, she is in a good place,” Robertson wrote. “Her last show is this coming Friday Night Beauty. Hope you join her, I know I will. We can send her off with a lot of support and good wishes. She has a lot of adventures ahead :)”

QVC Host Patti Reilly, Long-Rumored To Be Leaving, Is Actually Leaving

February 27, 2011

Another long-time QVC host is flying the coop. Patti Reilly is following Lisa Mason out the door.

Reilly posted the news on her blog, on her own website. Thanks for the tip, Joanie-B!

Patti Reilly's photo from Puerto Rico

Here’s part of Reilly’s blog:

“It’s true that I am leaving QVC after 11 great years. I’m looking forward to opening myself up to new ideas and experiences in life, but I’d be fooling myself if I didn’t admit that it’s a little scary. I’ve been so lucky to have a healthy family, nephews, my niece, great friends and co-workers, all in their own way who have opened up and shared a piece of their life with me. Through a different lens, and mentally picturing myself for one day in their shoes, came the realization that I want to try other things. That I want to value and really, really be present with my family & friends more.

Reilly, fresh from a vacation in Puerto Rico, wrote that she had an epiphany when when her black lab got sick last summer. She said she lives alone with her two dogs, and was heartbroken when the lab could no longer get up the stairs to sleep with her.

I talked to my family and friends more and reached out to people I haven’t seen in years. I stepped back and looked at my life, which is not really where I ultimately envisioned it to be. I would love to boast about my children, husband & homelife, but my picture right now just looks different than what I would have thought had you asked me 10 years ago. I have an opportunity now to take a step, start a new journey and I’m going to embrace that. I know that if Piper could climb up those stairs one last time, she definitely would!

Reilly was doing executive training when she caught the QVC bug.

QVC was the only watchable show on at 2 or 3 in the morning. I saw Lisa Robertson selling Smashbox Cosmetics and suddenly found my next goal. I auditioned for a Show Host position in February, 2000 and was offered the job a month later. I’ve been at QVC for 11 years now…can you believe it??? I love what I do, especially when I host beauty shows.

Reilly is a very polarizing figure. QVC fans either loved her or hated her. She sparked a lot of speculation when she lost a ton of weight, We suspected surgery, but she claimed it was just a diet. On some of her more recent appearances, she made bizarre comments about her moods and sometimes made off remarsk to vendors.

She is regularly brutally lampooned on the Television Without Pity website.

QVC’s Red Carpet Party From L.A. Rocks With Stars Like Joan Collins, Nolan Miller’s Date

March 6, 2010

We came in late to watch QVC’s “The Buzz on the Red Carpet” from L.A. Friday night, and were surprised to see Patti Reilly in the West Chester studio.

We checked the online forums to see what we missed, and apparently the home shopping network had trouble getting its live feed from the Left Coast and Reilly had to fill in at the last minute until they got things fixed.

Anyway, we were pretty impressed with QVC’s celebrity-studded pre-Oscar event at the swank Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. Lisa Robertson was doing the selling, while Mary Beth Roe and Shawn Killinger were conducting celebrity interviews. Joan Collins, QVC vendor Nolan Miller’s date, and Tia Carrere were among those in the house.

A still drop-dead gorgeous (and fellow Northwestern alum) Cindy Crawford was hawking Meaningful Beauty products, and former entertainment-magazine show host Nancy O’Dell introduced her QVC fashion jewelry line.

“I’ve loved QVC for a long time,” O’Dell said.

QVC vendors Isaac Mizrahi, Rachel Zoe, Chaz Dean and Bruce Makowsky were also on the air.

The fun will continue Saturday night.

Singer Marie Osmond Dances Into QVC With New ‘Shine’ Jewelry Line, And Put A Sock On It Patti

October 25, 2009

Marie Osmond, who famously fainted on “Dancing With The Stars,” Monday debuts her new fashion jewelry line on QVC, Shine!

The Mormon singer has been selling dolls for quite some time now on QVC, and in fact she has a doll show tomorrow right before the 3 p.m. debut of her jewelry. We saw a big chunky fake gem bracelet and a variety of earrings on QVC’s Web site from her line.

By the way, we have the TV on, and QVC host Patti Reilly is selling an edible candy jewelry maker for “girl gourmets.” Is it us, or has she gotten increasingly loud and annoying ever since she lost a ton of weight? Next time she’s on, we’re putting the TV on mute.

Singer And Tabloid Target Jessica Simpson Gets Bad Reviews For Debut On QVC

October 19, 2009

Poor Jessica Simpson. The unlucky-in-love singer’s debut on QVC midnight with her new accessories line was drawing a big thumbs-down from viewers, and after looking at some of the video clips, we had to agree.

The Texas blonde was on the air with her mother Tina Simpson, who was doing much of the talking about the handbags and purses that her daughter was selling. The younger Simpson was not very articulate describing her merchandise, turning to her mother for help. In fact, it looks like QVC brought mom out to bail Simpson out.

And posters on QVC’s online forums noted that host Patti Reilly had to really chat it to describe the items, since Simpson was not doing much talking about them herself.

One of  Simpson’s purses Monday is QVC’s Today’s Special Value, a $60 satchel that is vinyl, not leather. There is also a TSV Special from Simpson’s line, $84 suede scrunch boots. But when Reilly asked the singer about the boots, Simpson she usually wears high heels, and asked her mom to talk up the boots.

Not quite a ringing endorsement of your own product.

There were seveal threads about Simpson on QVC’s forums. Some viewers complained that Simpson was awkward.

“It is not the usual banter and she is not enthusiastic for her line,” said one poster. “The host is selling it. I thought it odd her mom had to come out, but she must need that reassurance.”

Maybe Simpson will be more relaxed and chattier on her shows the rest of Monday.

Carson Kressley Brings His Queer Eye to QVC

September 30, 2009

Carson Kressley, of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” fame, was his usual incorrigible self on QVC Wednesday, as the network ended its “Designing Men” series. He did several shows, including one with a studio audience in West Chester. His mom and sister were in the house, witnesses as Kressley did makeovers of two women.

He can’t resist making jokes, which included an endless stream of quips and sexual innuendoes — with mom right there watching. For example, Kressley is offering a long shawl in his fall collection, and host Patti Reilly had him hold one end while she held the other.

“Let’s see how long it is,” Reilly said.

“Patty, I thought you were coming on to me,” Kressley shot back.

We guess you had to be there, but it sure cracked us up. Kressley also managed to squeeze in a plug in for his show on Lifetime, “How to Look Good Naked.”

This week QVC trotted out the male designers who do lines for the network, including not only Kressley but Dennis Basso, Bradley Bayou, Bob Mackie and Louis Dell’Olio.

We literally bumped into Kressley once while we walking on Park Avenue South. Now, he’s leaving the East Coast and heading back to Las Vegas, where he’s got a hot date with Cher.

Advice for Chunky QVC and HSN Hosts: You Go Girls, To The Gym, And Skip Wolfgang’s Food

September 24, 2009

Shannon Smith

The female hosts on QVC and HSN may or may not be getting better, but they sure are getting bigger. Women on both the No. 1 and No. 2 home shopping channels seem to have gained a lot of weight in the past few months, enough that it had us doing a double-take at what we are seeing on the screen.

HSN’s Lynn Murphy, Chris Scanlon, Connie Craig-Carroll, Suzanne Runyan and Shannon Smith are all looking fuller around the face and hips. It’s a sad setback for Smith, who slimmed down last year and looked spectacular.

Perhaps everyone is doing too much sampling when celebrity chefs Wolfgang Puck, Emeril Lagasse and Todd English are in the house, cooking up a storm to demonstrate their cookware lines.

We aren’t the only ones to notice the weight gains. One writer on an HSN Forum asked whether Murphy was pregnant, because she looks so big. Murphy got married this summer.

If she is pregnant, we’re not aware that she’s officially announced it yet, or if any of her colleagues are pregnant (Here’s a hot tip: Never ask a woman when she’s due unless you are absolutely sure she is pregnant).

And on QVC, right now Jill Bauer, Jane Treacy and Jacque Gonzales sure look a lot wider when they stand up and step away from their tables on-air.

It’s said that the TV camera makes you look 15 pound heavier, but these ladies can’t blame the camera for the girth we are seeing on them now.

They need to start using their own networks’ products, starting with Spanx for a slimmer appearance immediately and then going on NutriSystem to lose the extra pounds.

Maybe everyone should ask QVC host Patti Reilly for her diet secrets. The once hefty host is a sliver of her old self, with a teeny wasp-like waist. Patti, you look marvelous.
